Other Thoughts: Despite the negative reviews, I took a chance on one of these over the Black Friday weekend, and either I lucked out or many people are getting quality refurbs but just not bothering to leave positive reviews. People who receive bad units will definitely leave bad reviews though. I take this to mean this isn't a stellar machine, but as always YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. Still, I wanted to stop by and counter some of the negativity with some positive feedback from a recent purchase. Long term, the product viability is still up in the air. However, I only expect a year or two at the most out of products like these. Hopefully it holds up at least that long, if not longer.

The only real issue I've come across is that when using the touchscreen with the keyboard attached, I loose the cursor in some apps such as Google Chrome when going back to using the mouse (touchpad) after having been scrolling the page in Chrome via the touchscreen. However, I'm sure this minor annoyance is a Windows 8.1/Chrome bug, probably not an issue with the unit itself. Minor annoyance, but not a deal breaker.

Long term, I intend to start using this unit as part of a portable music production/recording psuedo-studio, attached to a synthesizer and connected to Ableton Live. If I'm able to update reviews, I may come back and post an update. Maybe, maybe not. :)

If you take a chance, I wish you the best with your purchase!

Lexar Echo ZX 32GB Backup Drive Model LEHZX32GBSBNA
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

1 out of 5 eggs Awesome! But only for about 3 days... then, poof! Utterly dead. 12/12/2011

This review is from: Lexar Echo ZX 32GB Backup Drive Model LEHZX32GBSBNA

Pros: Fast!
Tiny!
Not a darned thing else!

Cons: Unresponsive!
Lifeless!
Defunct!
Deceased!
Dead!

Other Thoughts: I've NEVER had a flash drive fail on me... until now. This one lasted a mere 3 days!

I got this particular unit from Amzn, for use with my 11" MacBook Air, that I'm always running out of space with on its limited 64GB SSD. I bought it for the size, because I was planning on keeping it plugged in all the time. When it died, I hadn't realized it. I just saw the popup stating that the flash drive had been removed unexpectedly. The next day, when I want to transfer tons of development work to it, I noticed it was not working. It hasn't worked since. Tried accessing it from Windows and Linux, and was still unsuccessful. The machine recognizes it as a flash drive, but it can find no partitions to mount.

Thankfully I only lost a few screencasts, but had it lived to see a few more days, I would have lost ALL my development work!! Moral of the story: don't trust a single device to be your data backup. Backup, backup and backup again... to 3 devices!

2 out of 5 eggs Started Dying In the First Week (Sony Vaio Running Vista) 04/29/2008

This review is from: Seagate Momentus 7200.2 ST9200420AS 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Decent speed once your remove the jumper, which required thin tweezers with good grips. Cloning was fast coming from a 160GB 5400RPM Hitachi.

Cons: Hardly lasted the first week. Started clicking here and there initially, then gradually increased. Clicked like crazy while writing data, even when simply surfing the Web (which writes content to the browser's cache). I even got my first BSOD on Vista, which diagnostics said was caused by hard drive failure. I thought BSODs were a thing of the past with Vista. Apparently, not so. Oh well.

Initially, the drive ran slower than the old 5400RPM Hitachi. Firefox lagged considerably. After my BSOD, I cloned the drive back to my original drive, removed the jumper and rebooted without the jumper. The drive did speed up a bit, but it wasn't much faster than the original Hitachi. Perhaps I Runs quite hot ~55C when not elevated.

Other Thoughts: Used in a Sony VAIO VGN-C290 running Vista Business.

I am looking at the 5400RPM 250GB Toshiba 3.0Gb/s drive as its replacement.

I choose this drive because it was rated 5 eggs, but I'm assuming success with this drive is hit-and-miss. Vista also had some slight ailments the first few times I used the drive, such as a grungy-white bootscreen (which fortunately went away after it finished booting - scary though).

Also, don't use canned air to cool the computer, as the propellant turns into a toxic gas when used on a hot surface (according to the cautions on the can). I did this thinking it'd be fine, but the resulting gas lingered a while and it clung to my throat for hours. Nasty stuff.
