Still going good

Acer Laptop Aspire AMD Phenom II N830 4GB Memory 500GB HDD ATI Radeon HD 4250 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit AS5552-5898

Pros: Bought this in 2011 and it's still going well. It has faired nearly as well as a previous Compaq, at a quarter the price. Was fast for a long time, then it started to bog down...plenty of space on the HDD and 4GB ram and not being a power user, I copped it off the the typical bog of Windows. It seems that no matter what, Windows (whatever version) will just about slow to a crawl after about 3 years use. Best answer is to do a clean install. the Alt+F10 of the Acer here started the eRecovery partition and reinstalled EVERYTHING back to factory state, without much need for input from me. Meaning, it was very automated and had the computer up and running in less than 30 minutes, much better than doing a manual OS install, though there is some bloatware. CPU fan is going most of the time, but it's to be expected with a laptop.

Cons: I can't pinpoint if it's an Acer thing or Windows 7 issue, but I had some serious slowdowns in usability. Internet speed seemed forever delayed. It was almost like the ping was very slow, but other devices and computers had no such slowdown. I'm somewhat computer savvy and tried fixing the issue many times (in addition to forever running HDD) and never got to the bottom of things.

Overall Review: Well worth the $. Would buy again.

Powerful for a low price

Acer Laptop Aspire AMD Phenom II N830 4GB Memory 500GB HDD ATI Radeon HD 4250 15.6" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit AS5552-5898

Pros: Fast processor Decent graphics integrated keypad Quiet fan not too much bloatware Newegg customer service was excellent

Cons: only 5400rpm hdd* USB only 2.0 and awkward positions (near the front) Bit of a dust magnet around screen bezel runs warm * So far, the 5400rpm drive does not seem "slow". On my previous machine, I upgraded to 7200rpm, but it doesn't feel so necessary on this machine. My own benchmark is mostly how long it takes to boot with windows and starting programs.

Overall Review: What a deal @ $399 w/free 3-day shipping. First unit had a bad fan right out of the box, made a loud clicking noise the moment I first pressed the power button and whenever the fan came on after that. Newegg CS was awesome...they shipped me a new one out right away while I kept the old one so I had a machine to use until the new one arrived. New one is perfect, no fan issue. Newegg paid for all the shipping...and when I called questioning the exact expiration of the returning 7-day shipping label they emailed me a new one. They anticipated my needs and made the whole experience easy! As a note of comparison, this is replacement for a 2004 Compaq Presario w/1.6ghz pentium M 1gb xp home 7200rpm
