Intel i7 for the price of an i5

HP Laptop Pavilion Intel Core i7-2630QM 8GB Memory 1.5TB HDD AMD Radeon HD 6770M 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit dv7-6187cl
HP Laptop Pavilion Intel Core i7-2630QM 8GB Memory 1.5TB HDD AMD Radeon HD 6770M 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit dv7-6187cl

Pros: 1. 17.3" i7 for the price of a 15" i5 2. Dual 750 GB hdds come standard (*not* RAIDed); third thing I did after receiving this (after turning it on and then burning the restore DVDs--it took 4) was swap out the primary with a 120GB OCZ Agility SSD I pick up from Newegg ($70 after sale and rebate!). 3. Dedicated video card and Blueray drive 4. High capacity battery (I've been getting ~6.5 hours with music playing and a cooling pad plugged in) 5. Full size keyboard with number pad 6. 8 GB of memory (though it comes with 2x4GB chips installed instead of a single 8GB module) 7. Great looking machine with great built-in sound 8. Good screen (but as others have pointed out, max resolution is 1600x900 and it's a bit more reflective that I'd prefer, making it hard to work if you're picking up glare from a nearby window)

Cons: 1. Laptop is missing some of the more common "situational awareness" features found on just about everything else: there are no lights to indicate the Num Lock is active, while the hdd activity light is on the right side of the machine next to the USB ports--right where it'll never be seen!). 2. Came with the HP function/hotkey "feature" active--instead of providing separate hotkeys for volume, wireless network and media play, they are mapped to the function keys by default. Which means that in order to actually use the function keys, you have to hold the "FN" button while tapping the F key you want (which doesn't work for me since I actually use my F keys). This is easily disabled in the BIOS, however. 3. The battery sticks out far enough from the bottom of the machine to lift it a bit on a desk/table, but if you're actually working on your lap, it'll get uncomfortable pretty quick (so find a decent cooling pad). Of course, none of that is enough to warrant taking any eggs off!

Overall Review: After reading all of the reviews.. SHOCK! I actually received a 120w power supply with the machine. Of course, it was DOA! But I happened to have a 90w PS at the office from the dead 6 year old HP laptop this was replacing. The 90w power supply works like a champ! I called Newegg right away to get a new PS; they offered to RMA the machine, or give me a $25 credit to buy my own PS (they did not have a cost effective 120w PS in stock)--I took the credit then called up HP, and two days later had a brand new 120w power supply in hand! (That's enough to take one egg off, but they get that egg back for their customer service!) This is a great value for a lot of machine. I threw an SSD in right away, and am just waiting on the right time to jump on a 1TB drive and 16GB of RAM. Remember, though, this is a refurb machine. I happened to luck out and get one with no visible marks or blemishes, but who cares about some cosmetic damage when you're getting an i7 for this price?

Nice Gaming Mouse

Logitech G300 Black/Grey 9 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical 2500 dpi Gaming Mouse
Logitech G300 Black/Grey 9 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical 2500 dpi Gaming Mouse

Pros: Multiple function buttons and three different profiles means you can: Set up one (or two) profiles for your favorite games. Keep a third profile for productivity apps (or vice versa). Nifty colors to choose from for each profile makes it easy to tell which profile you're currently in. Its software is easily configurable, and lets you program the buttons for whatever you'd like. Comfortable and responsive.

Cons: The cord is a bit long for my taste, given I'm using this primarily with a laptop. The cord is also a bit too rigid for my tastes (if I'm working on a cluttered desk/surface, it too easily hangs up on whatever else might be nearby). Realistically, only four of the nine buttons are truly programmable (that leaves you with LMB, RMB, scroll wheel button, one button to change profiles and two to change DPI).

Overall Review: I'm a righty who uses it with a "claw" grip. Just the right size and fit for me.

Great Product

Kensington K72367US Presentation Remote 2 GB micro SD card storage
Kensington K72367US Presentation Remote 2 GB micro SD card storage

Pros: Does precisely what it says: Fits well in the hand. USB dongle fits into the remote when not in use. 2GB Micro-SD card included/fits into USB dongle (and can be upgraded to a larger capacity card). BRIGHT green laser. Nice carrying case, with hard sides to protect remote from whatever else you pack into your laptop case.

Cons: Doesn't have a built-in mouse/cursor (but no one ever said it did). Now every time I bring it to a conference or class, everyone else wants to use it.

Overall Review: Great purchase. I doubt I'll regularly use the Micro-SD to store/transport presentations, but it's a convenient place to gather together other presenters' materials.

Good Toner Cart

Brother TN580 High Yield Toner Cartridge - Black
Brother TN580 High Yield Toner Cartridge - Black

Pros: It's a Brother toner cart, so you know what you're getting and it will be compatible. 7,000 pages is about right (though you can get more... see below). I burn through about five or six of these a year (for the past four-ish years on two different printers), and have only had one bad cart out of the box. Other than that lone straggler, I've NEVER had a problem with these.

Cons: Like any other Brother toner, the printer will indicate the toner is out long before there is no more useable toner in the cart.

Overall Review: Brother printers seem to use a simple photo "eye" system to determine when the cartridge is supposedly empty, though in reality there is probably two or three thousand more pages worth of toner in the cart at that point. Watch the price fluctuations, and grab the carts when they're back down in price!
