Pretty amazing for the price!

CHIMEI CMV 221D Black 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 330 cd/m2 800:1
CHIMEI CMV 221D Black 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 330 cd/m2 800:1

Pros: This is a very affordable monitor, or was when I bought it, with a rebate. I'd been wanting a 22" widescreen, and at the time, this was the best buy and had pretty decent reviews on Newegg, so I gave it a shot. I'm pleased with the brighness and contrast, that it had no dead pixels when turned on. The image is clear, but not as crisp as my Samsung 204B (20.1", 1600x1200 resolution), but seems on par with what other 1680x1050 monitors would provide. It is a wonderful gaming and video monitor, but only a good desktop monitor, the Samsung is better. I like the look and placement of the buttons, keeping the front uncluttered, and the menus and adjustments are very intuitive. Tilt and rotation of the base is solid enough.

Cons: The color variance between angles both vertically and horizontally is pretty extreme. I've had two other LCD monitors and both were better at having less color variance when moving your head than this monitor. The stand is somewhat large, as is the monitor itself. It won't quite fit in my monitor's enclosure, but it does work. I'd recommend that because the base has no height adjustment, you be ready to provide a fairly tall platform (around 4" or so) to get the monitor at eye level, which will smooth out the variance dramatically. One pixel became stuck, and was quickly unstuck using the back of my fingernail. So far, so good!

Overall Review: Some will wonder what you're going to get for a similar monitor that might cost a bit more or be from a more well-known brand. For the most part, the additional cost will be for a webcam, speakers, or an adjustable stand (and perhaps vertical viewing, which I've personally never needed). While height adjustment is nice, it's typically unnecessary on a better monitor because the color remains true at a much wider viewing angle. While I'm not blown away by this monitor like I thought I'd be, I must say I'm more than happy with what I got for the price. To truly get the most from this monitor, though, I can't emphasize enough, it MUST be at eye-level! Do what it takes to make that happen, and I think you'll be a very happy customer. The only reason this got 4 eggs is because if you're going to make a monitor that is so sensitive to viewing angle, you should at least provide a height adjustment on the stand.

I must have gotten a bad one...

D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit
D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: A TON of options that will really make you feel like you have total control over your router traffic. Setup is very straightforward. Many extra options that will help you shape traffic and secure your network much more easily. Removable antennas. Strong wireless signal.

Cons: Did not like my Realtek RTL8169 chip on my mobo, had to switch to the Marvell or the PC took forever to reconnect to the router. Could not manage to get the thing to work properly with UMA. I've done a lot of research and tweaking with UMA settings and this router did not like working with UMA. My BB 8900 dropped constantly and reconnected. My Katalyst seemed to stay connected, but had poor performance as well (dropping calls, etc.). I tried both 1.21 and 1.31 firmware, but there was no noticeable change. UMA might have gotten a LITTLE better, but was still flakey. Whether utilizing the extra wireless features (opening ports, prioritizing VOIP traffic, etc.) or disabling them entirely, wireless access for my cell phones was a total failure. The unit itself got very warm, but not overly so.

Overall Review: I've seen a variety of opinions on this router, most of them good, and it does have a lot of great options. However, if you want this for UMA (T-Mobile @Home, etc.), I would suggest staying away. It just doesn't want to stay connected. It's entirely possible that I got a bad router, but I'm going to give a Belkin router a try next. I'm using it now (they sell it here on Newegg, it's the only gigabit one they sell) and things are much better. The interface and options for the Belkin aren't as good, but so far I've had no problems and have been able to configure it the way I need to (connects X360, Tivo, PS3 and PC on gigabit LAN ports, laptop, 2 phones and a PSP on wireless). I wish you better luck than I had with the wireless end of things if you go with this router.

So far, so good!

Skytech Blaze 3.0 Gaming PC Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.60 GHz, RTX 3070 8 GB GDDR6, 1 TB NVMe, 16 GB DDR4 3200, B550 Motherboard, 750W Gold PSU, RGB Heatsink, AC Wi-Fi, Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Skytech Blaze 3.0 Gaming PC Desktop - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.60 GHz, RTX 3070 8 GB GDDR6, 1 TB NVMe, 16 GB DDR4 3200, B550 Motherboard, 750W Gold PSU, RGB Heatsink, AC Wi-Fi, Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Pros: - Fantastic deal for what you get - Perhaps not the best one could afford if video cards sold for anything close to a reasonable price right now - Solid cable management - The components are balanced well, making this a great system with no major modifications necessary - The only part that could make this product better would be a new motherboard, but that would also require a copy of Windows 10 (Pro, ideally), which is going to run you another $250 easy - The case is attractive and easy to work inside - I had an issue trying to upgrade my OS to Professional that didn't work, ending up changing my installation to Windows 10 Enterprise, and Skytech support was very communicative and helpful in getting me back to my original Windows Home install.

Cons: - The motherboard isn't the greatest. It's a microATX form factor, meaning it's a bit light on features, and the PCIe Express slot is covered by the graphics card. There is really no other option than a larger motherboard, as most of the 3000 series Nvidia cards are going to be as wide as the one included. This means you only have one full size PCIe slot available, which I used for discrete sound, as I was used to that on my prior build (~$50 for something decent that won't inflate the overall price by a significant amount). That said, you've got pretty much everything you need apart from perhaps a bit more storage, and there is space available to add that. - I find the ASRock RGB control software to be extremely limited and unintuitive. It is also not linked to the lighting on the CPU, so you need two different softwares to control them, making them impossible to synch up properly. I'm able to get the lighting the way I want it, though, and that wasn't a main selling point for me anyway. - The small motherboard makes it somewhat difficult to work with if you need to expand or swap out parts.

Overall Review: I've seen some reviews about Skytech that had me worried about this purchase, but I have to say that this has gone about as well as I could have possibly wanted it to. Everything has performed exactly as expected and there wasn't a single aspect of the build quality that I questioned when I was adding storage and the sound card to the system. It boots almost instantly and hasn't had a single glitch since I started using it. It plays everything I have at high settings or better at 60-144 FPS @1440p, and that's all I could ask for. Here's hoping the specs will keep me going for a good 3-5 years, because it feels like it will be at least that long before I want to delve into the PC building arena to look for another video card...

The sound of firecrackers, the smell of ozone, the fear of fried components...

Rosewill Stallion Series RD450-2-DB 450W ATX V2.2 Power Supply
Rosewill Stallion Series RD450-2-DB 450W ATX V2.2 Power Supply

Pros: - Lasted just over two years - Worked flawlessly as the PSU for an HTPC that was left on 24/7 during that time period - Rated power was over twice what was needed for the build, but for the price (at the time) seemed reasonable

Cons: - Failure was catastrophic, complete with scorch mark on the case that had me worried it had arced to my graphics card before it died. Luckily, both the motherboard and the UPS it was plugged into were robust enough that they protected all the components in my system when it failed. I felt I should write this review so people know the risks associated with this particular PSU. I've had power supplies fail before, but never like this. Every other PSU simply shut down, no explosions, nothing but the smell of ozone and no power. For the record, the case was neither cramped nor struggling to stay cool, so there were no external stressors on the PSU that would cause it to break down in such a fashion.

Overall Review: - If I were you, I'd spend a few more dollars on a PSU that is going to last at least five years and is warrantied for at least three. For those that run their systems constantly, as I do with most of mine, it's worth it for the peace of mind knowing that you're going to get your money's worth (this ended up costing me $17.50/year approximately, whereas a more expensive PSU with better parts and quality control would last three to five times longer and end up costing less over time). I took a chance with Rosewill on a PSU when I knew that the savings would likely mean I was receiving an inferior product with a pathetic one year warranty. I got exactly what I paid for, and it almost cost me a lot more, had it done damage to the rest of my build. It's just not worth it when you can spend forty dollars and get a decent PSU with solid reviews (often less if you snag a rebate).

Worked perfectly, looks amazing!

VANTEC NexStar HX4R NST-640S3R-BK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 & eSATA Quad Bay RAID HDD Enclosure
VANTEC NexStar HX4R NST-640S3R-BK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 & eSATA Quad Bay RAID HDD Enclosure

Pros: I've gone through a number of HDD enclosures like this, mainly from Sans Digital. I kept having to replace them because the power supplies would burn out not long after the warranty expired. For the cost of having a replacement power supply shipped to me and the time to swap it out, it ends up being faster to order a new enclosure. I went with this one because my needs are pretty basic (JBOD configuration attached to a WHS 2011 server). The setup was a snap, I just swapped the drives into the enclosure, plugged in the eSATA and power cables, and it worked without a hitch. Some have commented that the fan is loud, but that doesn't match my experience. I couldn't hear the fan at all. I've got four 2TB drives in it currently, two WD Green, a Seagate, and a Samsung. All of them are working great and the transfer speeds are what you'd expect for eSATA (100MB/s). So far, it's performed swimmingly and the design is one of the more attractive I've seen for this type of device. Oh, and look closely in the box if you don't spot the screws for the HDDs. Someone reviewed one of these saying it did not come with them, but mine had them in a small baggie that was taped to the inside of the box. You'll only need eight of them (2 per drive), but my bag had nine in it. The drives are loaded into end covers that screw onto the drive on the sides, ensuring they seat perfectly upon insertion, then lock in place with a sliding plastic switch. It's a nifty design that ensures swapping out a drive is a pretty easy thing to do. As I said, I've not had much luck with HDD enclosures in the past, but if this one holds up for awhile , I'd definitely purchase another as a replacement. As for the LEDs on the front, you have a green power LED at the top, and four blue LEDs that represent the hard drives, aligned vertically down the center. All the lights are the same intensity, which is not too bright to be offensive in a home theater environment, nor so dim that you're unable to see drive activity that might be taking place.

Cons: I personally have had zero issues, but according to some other reviewers, there can be problems with things like loud fans and loose USB connections creating annoyance and performance problems. Hopefully those problems are rare, because I can tell you in all honesty, I'm extremely pleased with mine! If it holds up for a good length of time, you just can't beat what you get for the price.

Overall Review: I'd take a chance on this one. The design is a thing of beauty that needs to be witnessed firsthand, and if you do get a dud, at least you bought it from Newegg, so returning it shouldn't be any problem whatsoever.

Couldn't be happier!

ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab
ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab

Pros: Provides a massive transfer speed increase for wireless transfers via the 802.11ac standards. The new antenna array design provides an improved signal quality to sustain these rates over fairly long distances (the distance between my router and bridge is about 55', with a clear line of sight through a doorway, but tech reviews state that solid speeds are often achieved with similar setups at 75'). My current speeds have peaked at 48MB/s! The router interface is quite professional-looking and robust. The design is innovative, as well, providing a stand that supports the device and prevents ethernet cables from dragging the unit backward. All my devices, both wired and wireless, are working flawlessly with the new setup.

Cons: I suppose it's a little bit spendy, and if you're using a bridge, you're going to need to upgrade that, as well. However, it's worth it to me, since it increased my wireless transfer speeds about five times over what I had with an 802.11n-based setup.

Overall Review: My personal recommendation would be to pair this with the Cisco Linksys WUMC710, an 802.11ac bridge. It pairs up seamlessly with the RT-AC66U using WPS, and if you end up getting paired with the wrong (slower) radio, you can easily configure the WUMC710 manually once it is paired up. I personally was able to use the Auto settings for both radios with no difficulties.
