ASUS RT-AC87R Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router

3 out of 5 eggs Fast.....BUT!>>>>> 07/26/2015

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87R Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router

Pros: Fast, easy to set up, software is pretty darn good. USB 3.0 AND USB 2.0.
Being able to access the network (AI Cloud) from anywhere is very cool! It's great for storing pictures and being able to access them with your phone.

Cons: Well, I have to reboot this thing pretty often, sometime a few times a day. I'm pretty sure this is due to heat, but it's still a bummer.
It has a very big foot print, which was expected, but it is still a con.
The USB 3.0 port is on the front, has a rubber cover that needs to be removed (and left hanging) in order to use the port. For a desk top placement, this is just plain ugly.

Other Thoughts: Well, the reboot issue is a killer! This thing gets HOT and then looses connection (I'm wired on my PC) and must be reset to get the connection back. This really sucks, especially for such a nice router. I'm going to try and find a way to keep it cool in the summer heat, to see if it helps, but I should need to do this.

4 out of 5 eggs Follow up after 2 years. 07/10/2015

This review is from: ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball Low-noise Blue LED CPU Cooler

Pros: I've had this running on an FX 4170 OC'd to 4.5 gigs. Been idling at 14° for the entire time. When stressing the CPU, I get up to 67°, sometimes a little higher when the room is hot. After 2 years the thing still runs strong. I would buy another if I was building another system.

Cons: Mounting was difficult and takes a lot of patience. It is har to clean.

I'm not fond of the blue LED lights.

Other Thoughts: My wifes computer has the XIGMATEK Gaia and it is noisy compared to this one (they both get loud under load). Both these cool OC'd AMD CPUs very well. The Gaia was MUCH easier to install.

4 out of 5 eggs It's pretty big! 06/22/2015

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC87R Wireless-AC2400 Dual-band Gigabit Router

Pros: It's fast, has the 4X4 MIMO Chipset.
The power button on the back is great to have. Set up is pretty simple. UI is better than the ones I have used in the past. USB 2.0 and 3.0 on board, and you can plug a USB drive into them and share it.

Cons: It is about 12"X6" and the antenna are very large (long and thick). The USB 3.0 plug is on the front....WHY?

Other Thoughts: I didn't NEED an AC2400 wireless router, but needed a new router (my wife's new phone runs on the 5ghz network) and this was on sale. Expanded my wireless to the back yard! It is fast. With 4 cell phones using wifi at the same time, a new router was needed and this one rocks! It does have WPA2-Enterprise, but you have to go through the whole set up to get it all to work (on the 5ghz band it's kinda hiding). Has a DDNS server, which is also nice.
