Samsung UN22F5000 22

2 out of 5 eggs Not up to Samsung quality 07/07/2013

This review is from: Samsung UN22F5000 22" Class 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV

Pros: Lightweight, casing looks great, packaged very well, and I trust the brand to last a while. Very good picture with good adjustments

Cons: The stuff that are cons are downright awful. Speakers? Remote? Channel List setup? Worse than meh, more like awful. Speakers rattle like crazy at merely 20 (out of 100). Remote has an awful layout. Channel listing allows a measly 5 characters (& is not one of them, so enjoy AE instead of A&E) and has a schizophrenic selection screen (horizontal wrap around advances the cursor to the next/previous row, but vertical does not).

Other Thoughts: Now many of the cons are forgivable on a big home theater TV because, let's face it, you're going to use a universal remote, and you're going to use a proper receiver and speakers, but for a small bedroom TV it's really unforgivable.

Probably the biggest oddity is that the frame of the TV as shown in Newegg's pictures are inaccurate! The frame is 3/4 of an inch and is double the thickness of the photo.

I've noticed I've bought a lot of Samsung stuff over the years but this purchase has undone a lot of the extra weight I offer to the brand. Especially as the most expensive of the 23" and under sized 1080p TVs.

DIYPC MiniQ7-B USB 3.0 w/Dual Red Fans Black SECC ATX Mini Tower Computer Case

4 out of 5 eggs The case I didn't know I wanted 03/21/2013

This review is from: DIYPC MiniQ7-B USB 3.0 w/Dual Red Fans Black SECC ATX Mini Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very compact and light, novel power supply mounting system, good looks good overall.

Cons: Lightness comes with a price in metal quality, needs a little extra work for proper air flow, no way to remove the external drive flap, fit and finish not rock solid.

Other Thoughts: Somehow the size of PC tower cases have been creeping wider and wider over the past 15 years and I didn't realize how much so until I got my hands on this case. I needed something to fit in a tight space and support a full-size ATX with full-height cards and this did the trick.

The narrowness comes at a price, it's a little tricky getting cards properly secured because you have to use the right screws due to the flap that covers it, and it sticks out from the back slightly, like they forgot it needed a rail for that. It's also more difficult to route cables around and maintain a no-fly zone around components. The insides of the side panel aren't so much painted as they are plastic coated and it seems to prevent tape from being used to hold wires in place, and the short risers limit routing wires under the motherboard. The opposite side panel has a bit of room but not too many access holes to the opposite side since it's intended for the power cord. So far, having AC lines running along the underside hasn't encouraged any stability issues so I'm quite happy about that.

The metal all over is wafer thin, and is bent quite easily, which is why the thing only weighs 4 kg. Getting a drive into the top bay pretty much requires the top fan to be temporarily removed or the front panel to be detached, which is a pain if you do it a lot. It doesn't look large enough to support a hot-swap bay if you were planning on that.

Make sure you check your power supply and get the fans to agree on which sides are intake and which sides are exhaust. By default, the top and back are exhaust and I don't see too many power supplies not set to exhaust as well. If you put some fans on the side as intake it should work fine without flipping anything around. To be honest, I would have rather had just the upper fan and one side fan for this purpose than the 80mm on the back.

All in all I really liked the case but would happily pay a little more to get the same size except made out of sturdier stuff.

Logitech K120 Black USB Wired Standard Keyboard

1 out of 5 eggs Are you sure this is a Logitech? 03/18/2013

This review is from: Logitech K120 Black USB Wired Standard Keyboard

Pros: Has backslash where I want it, full size backspace, non-L enter key, standard 3x2 key layout above the arrow keys

Cons: Cheap beyond cheap but not a cheap price

Other Thoughts: I had to check the box again after I plugged this in and started using it. A really lightweight, mushy keyboard with short travel almost as bad as those flexible silicone keyboards. The USB cable is extremely thin and one good tug is likely to break it.

The keyboard is so light that it slides all over the place and there's no rubber to hold put. There's no "bezel" around the keyboard so outside the key area there's a quick falloff instead. Hard to describe, but it's like the shaved a few mm on each side.

The printing on the keys is similarly bad. It's painted on each key instead of baked on, so I don't think it'll last at all.

All in all, a pretty bad keyboard that I'm surprised Logitech released. I could have (and in the past have) gotten cheaper keyboards that feel the same as this one at 25% of the price. I've been buying exclusively Logitech keyboards and mice for years and, frankly, a product this bad only hurts the Logitech name. I really feel like I wasted extra money that should have been returned in quality. Disappointing.
