1 out of 5 eggs Giving up on this board 05/19/2014

This review is from: ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Fortunately, I was able to find a PCI-e NIC card for only 11 bucks, and I can go back to having a stable, consistent network connection.

Cons: Been in IT for 15 years, ran a Help Desk for 13. I've built machines from the ground up. Working in a help desk I learned that a cluster of similar symptoms for users very typically indicates a common source of the problem. I've had two of these boards, and both of them would lose network connection. Other reviews point to the same problem with a flaky NIC on the board. ASUS tech support is suggesting it is a problem with my network: no other machine on my LAN has this problem, my previous workstation did not have this problem, and only the two machines with this ASUS board have the bad NIC problem. You can see my skepticism. Alternatively, ASUS wants me to ship them to board for their examination. Naturally, this would leave me without a PC weeks on end while they troubleshoot it.

Other Thoughts: Done with ASUS. There's clear evidence of a problem with their product (see other user reviews here on NewEgg) and they are attempting either blame it on the end user or stall us until we get tired of trying to get satisfaction. I'll spend the extra money to get an add-on NIC, and never give ASUS another dime.

2 out of 5 eggs Update to my last review 05/15/2014

This review is from: ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: First, the Egg worked with me on getting a fast RMA cross-shipped, so I appreciate that. The board works well EXCEPT for the NIC. As this is the second one of these MBs I've had, I have to say it's an issue (see other reviews which note the problem as well). Per manufacture guidance, I updated the NIC drivers from their website, but the on-board NIC tends to run about a day and half before becoming unstable or losing connection entirely.

Cons: On-board NIC is unstable and unreliable. Yes, once it loses connection, I can typically disable the NIC and re-enable to reconnect to the network, but I shouldn't have to be doing this every day and a half. That's just unsat in any setting.

Other Thoughts: If you need a stable NIC connection, do not get this board. If you're going to build an isolated machine that never connects to a network or an internet, then this motherboard ought to do the job. But most of us use the Internet quite a bit (like, to write this review), and an unstable, inconsistently available NIC makes this card a very bad idea.

2 out of 5 eggs Mobo: so-so. The Egg? Very Lame 04/25/2014

This review is from: ASUS H81M-K LGA 1150 Intel H81 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Colorful box.

Cons: Worked about 6 hours before NIC became flaky. I bought this as part of a bundle. Built the PC, and the new Mobo is essentially useless before the day is out. I give it another day, reinstall drivers, look for updated drivers; nothing works. NIC will work for a while and then give up.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg instantly gave me an RMA for this issue, which leads me to believe it's not an unknown problem with these boards. But they would not cross-ship me a replacement. They have my CC number, they've already gotten $500 from me, but they won't send me a replacement until they receive the bad board. Which means I'll be down for a week or more waiting for a replacement to be shipped. Or, I could spend more money to order another mobo and play the waiting for a refund game. Incredibly crummy customer service, folks, because it looks like I'll be paying a higher price for a replacement Mobo as I'll be buying it as a stand alone.
