5 out of 5 eggs Works as Advertised 2 11/20/2015

This review is from: AVerMedia C285 Game Capture HD II

Pros: I am writing an update to my first review......I have had this unit now for 1 year and have recorded many videos with it. In my first review I stated that the only thing I didn't really like about the unit (there is always something not perfect about ANY device) was the HDCP encryption. It sucks, and it is this way with ALL recording devices that have HDMI recording I found. Unless you have a stripper of some sort you cannot record through HDMI. (PS3 and Xbox exception?). By accident. TOTAL accident, I needed to split the TV signal off to another device so I bought an ordinary HDMI splitter. Viola. NO MORE HDCP. I record through the HDMI perfect now.

Cons: The only con, other than wishing that the unit could defeat the HDCP, but I am sure if they defeated it within the unit they would not be able to legally sell them, is the timer recording. While it does work I wish they could improve it. Next would be if it could record in 5.1 sound like the Hauppauge.

Other Thoughts: I just saw it for sale in Newegg for 115.00. That sucks. I paid 150.00 for it.

Pros: It is ASUS which I have typically good results with. The board didn't have all the features I wanted, but I knew that when purchasing it so I have to give it 5 eggs. I have good luck with most boards I buy, but you can't go wrong with ASUS usually.

Cons: I have read many horror stories of people purchasing refurbed items, but I have been really fortunate in all of the different refurbed items I have purchased over the years. When I get the items they are packaged and look perfect. New. But this time it did not look like a refurbed item. It looked like an open item that someone haphazardly threw together in the box. Disappointed, but the board works.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board as I have a Sandy Bridge 2600k i7 and really like the processor. 1155 boards are growing real scarce so I bought this one and of course as soon as I buy it a few better ones become available, but I will continue to buy ASUS...

5 out of 5 eggs Works as advertised 11/18/2014

This review is from: AVerMedia C285 Game Capture HD II

Pros: Works as advertised so far and I have really been putting it through the passes. I own a Hauppauge 512 which is an excellent unit and there are pro's and con's between the two units. This unit works so smooth. Easy to use and the record quality is excellent. With both units there is the HDCP issue which is not either units fault. It is an industry standard to 'protect video.' So the HDCP is a disappointment on both units, but again, you don't knock down eggs for something they have no control over. Buy an illegal stripper if that is an issue. With the Hauppauge the software was better for setting controlled recording times as I bought the Avermedia Game Capture to use as a DVR essentially. I could give a flip about capturing games. It works perfect with my cable box and I bought it because it has the Component cables that allow me to record from the cable box. I would LOVE to record using the HDMI but the HDCP encryption prohibits that on EITHER UNIT. But I LOVE not having to use a computer to record. Just set it up went through some settings, updated the firmware that has timer recording now and it works so easy and perfect so far...

Cons: Other then I wish I could get around the bloody HDCP I have ZERO complaints. IF something goes wrong with the unit then I will add a new review.
