1 out of 5 eggs Horrible Software 03/26/2014

This review is from: Lenovo 70B89003NA Diskless System Iomega ix4-300d Network Storage 4-BAY

Pros: Price and Hardware Design

Cons: The only way to control the software is by clicking on icons in the web software. Which is unfortunate, because it is incomplete.

Documentation is also bad. The website they send you to will be closing late 2014.

Other reports descrive it as slow. My experience has not been speedy, but I don't know that that is the NAS's fault.

Other Thoughts: First I bought this unit. Then, I bought 4 4tb hard drives from their approved drive list. I installed the drives and plugged it in. I made the mistake of plugging it in too far from my router, so I had to unplug it before logging in from the computer. That was a mistake on my part.

After I plugged it in and logged on, the raid manager would not load. As it happens, the only solution is to physically remove the drives and reformat them in another machine. To me, that is the first example of their software's failure.

For the record, everytime I plugged or unplugged, I did so with the power off and the power cord unplugged.

After I reformatted the four drives, I plugged them back in and turned the NAS back on. The screen flashed a message that I needed to give permission to write over existing data for each individual drive. I only had the opportunity to do so for two of the drives. That is the second example of the software's failure.

So I created a RAID 1 with the two drives that the NAS accepted. It was a challenge to figure how to attach the other two to the RAID. Finally, I unplugged them and plugged them back in. I was able to grant write permission and add them to the RAID array. After that, I was able to convert the RAID 1 to a RAID 5.

Then part of the NAS told me I had about 10TB of space, which is appropriate for a RAID 5. But when I tried to transfer files, It kept saying I only had 3.5 TB of space, which is appropriate for the 2 disk RAID 1. I could not find any way to upload more than the 3.5 TB of files. When I checked the correct forum (a challenge to find, btw), I saw a similar complaint from another customer. A response from Lenovo told them to do a full reset. That is, the only way to make all the space available is to erase all the data. That is the third example of the software's failure.

To me, the question is not if I would recommend it to anyone else; I would not. The question is whether I should discard it now, or wait until I find a fourth example of the NAS software failure and lose everything.

Pros: Easy set up with Windows 8.1. Works as expected.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I use it with new laptop I use with the TV. Haven't tested the "eight one-touch hot keys".
