NZXT Sentry-2 5.25

2 out of 5 eggs Need to Revise My Previous Review 07/20/2014

This review is from: NZXT Sentry-2 5.25" Touch Screen Fan Controller

Pros: Looks good on the front of the case. Works well when they work. Can control 2 pin fans.

Cons: Previously, I gave 5 eggs and a grand review of this item. I must of gotten lucky on the first one that i bought because I bought three more of them, but it has not gone so well. Of the three that I bought, I have had to RMA 2 of them back to Newegg (not Newegg's fault at all). The two units that I have returned have temperature readings that jump all over the place. The temperature keeps changing as much as 10 degrees C in just a couple of seconds. That is not acceptable. Now I have to pay shipping back, and that has got me upset. I did pick a couple up on sale, so maybe I will have the regular price into them after the RMA shipping costs.

Other Thoughts: I thought that maybe I had a noisy power supply for one of the RMAs, but when I got the new unit back, the temperature is only jumping around a couple of degrees, and it is not too bad. Is stable on some of the channels. Before I send the second one back (today), I am going to pull all of the temp probes out and put them in a thermal insulator and see if the temperature readings still jump all over that place, Since thermocouples have a low signal output, they might be picking up some noise, but i doubt that will do any good because when something is not working right, it is not working right. It's too bad that there is trouble with some of these as they are pretty and have the potential to work good. Everything is so cheaply made these days. Hot glue and just cheaply made. Why can't they put a few extra dollars into the design and quality and make a better product? If I had to do it all over again, I would have went with something else. I may yet return them all and go with something else. I wish that they would all work as well as the first one that i bought.

5 out of 5 eggs I Like This Controller 06/19/2014

This review is from: NZXT Sentry-2 5.25" Touch Screen Fan Controller

Pros: This fan controller works really good, and it looks good on the front of the case. I was always a little hesitant at buying one of the NZXT fan controllers because the NZXT SEN-001LX does not have the great reviews in the world. I went ahead and took a risk and bought this one. I am glad i did. I love the thing. I can place temp probes where i want them.

Cons: It is a very simple controller. You can not set your own fan curves or anything fancy like that, but this is really not a con, but for your information. You can set it to manual, and control fan individually. This is handy for experimenting with temperatures.

Other Thoughts: The one application where this controller will be very good: you bought a computer case that came with fans, but they are not three pin fans? Then use this controller to control your two pin fans. no need to buy a whole bunch of new fans.

ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 SSI CEB Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS

Pros: In a previous post, I titled the post, "Do Not Buy this Board." Well, after owning this board for a while I have to say that it is an excellent motherboard. It has never BSOD'd or froze or anything bad. I run Windows XP, Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit), and FreeBSD on the machine. Even though I get a lot of 'No Driver Attached' messages on FreeBSD, it still runs great, and virtual machines under freebsd still run great. I also game on it.

Cons: The reason that I said do not buy this board was the fact that the SSD caching does not work correctly. I bought an SSD for the machine: wasted money. Then Asus has videos on you tube bragging about the SSD caching along with the marketing graphics on the box too. Asus bent over backwards to help, but I was upset about the SSD caching not working. It still does not work correctly. It always forgets the the SSD cache has been enabled after a complete power down. I was also upset that Asus will not put a seal on their motheboard packages. I got a bent pin with the motherboard from Newegg. Newegg did exchange the board. Either Asus or Newegg has some employees that might do that.

Other Thoughts: With a Xeon CPU and ECC memory, this board never crashes. Runs great. How may motherboard seals could you buy with the two or three boards that I exchanged? SSD caching still does not work and will never work.
