QUIET

Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I've never in my life had such a quiet hard drive. In addition, it has a 32MB cache which is good for a low-power drive. If you're looking for performance go with the Caviar Black for a bit more money. If you want cheap or quiet storage and performance isn't your main concern I would definitely recommend this drive!

Cons: None

Overall Review: I put two 1TB greens in a mirror on an ICH8R and I couldn't be happier. I've been dissapointed with Seagate for a couple of years now, and they were once the only brand I would buy. Seagate is still my drive of choice for SCSI/SAS, however in the SATA / desktop world I avoid seagate like the plague. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the purchase of Maxtor, but their quality of late has really sufferred. The last 4 drives I bought were 7200.10's @ 320GB and they're LOUD and have a very obnoxious and seemingly random click (that sounds more like the head slamming the side of the drive than a seek) Go western digital. You won't be dissapointed.

Keeps Failing

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply

Pros: It worked at one point

Cons: First one failed after about 8 months. The computer just stopped booting. I had to rip out the power supply and reinstall another one to be sure. Sent out an RMA and immediately had problems with the replacement. On my second RMA now.

Overall Review: Horrible quality for what I thought was a premium PSU. The PSU is the one component you really want to get right, not just because they're the most likely to go, but because ripping them out and replacing them is such a pain in the rear. You need another PSU or a PSU tester just to be sure. The performance of these may be good, but I'm unimpressed with the longevity.

Buy this monitor now!

ASUS VS Series VS247H-P 24" (Actual size 23.6") Full HD 1920 x 1080 60Hz HDMI VGA DVI-D SPLENDID Modes Widescreen LED Backlight LCD Monitor
ASUS VS Series VS247H-P 24" (Actual size 23.6") Full HD 1920 x 1080 60Hz HDMI VGA DVI-D SPLENDID Modes Widescreen LED Backlight LCD Monitor

Pros: Just an amazing display overall. The colors are vibrant, the contrast is crisp, and it's bright. I put this next to a 5-year old S-IPS and it blows it out of the water: I might as well have a monochrome monitor for a second monitor.

Cons: Sometimes when you turn on the display you see quarter-circles of gray area appear in lower right, with the center of the circle being the power button. It goes away after 5 minutes or so, but it worried me at first. Stand only adjusts tilt. I'll have to buy an after-market stand I think :(

Overall Review: Honestly he best purchase I've made in a very, very long time. The biggest difference I noticed were the yellows: Some web pages (like newegg) that I used to browse all the time look almost completely different (better!). I bought two of these: one for home and one for the office and I get compliments non-stop on my monitor at the office. People are blown away. For < $200 this monitor is a steal. I used to only get Samsung, but Asus has a great reputation so considering that the comparable Samsung monitor was almost $100 more I rolled the dice and I couldn't be happier. I'm still amazed every time I look at this thing and I've had it almost a month.

Great Card, Great Company

EVGA GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) 1280MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card 012-P3-1470-AR
EVGA GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) 1280MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card 012-P3-1470-AR

Pros: Amazing frame rates at 1680x1050. Decided to "step up" to the GTX 480. EVGA's support is AMAZING. Cost me $150 and they're shipping me the 480.

Cons: The card definitely runs hot, even when you're not gaming. I'm going to get an after-market cooler for my 480.

Overall Review: If you're looking at another card for $10 or $20 less from another company, I'd drop the extra money FOR SURE and go with EVGA. Their products are reliable and the service is second to none.

Quiet, Fast

Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2M080G2GC
Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2M080G2GC

Pros: Silent, fast, relatively inexpensive. Software engineers need not think twice. Buy this drive. I build large software solutions in VS (~30 projects and > 500k lines of code). 1/10th the build time. Seriously if you write code this is the best upgrade you can get.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I've been holding off on a full PC upgrade for a while since my overclocked E6400 + 8800 GTS have been holding out so well (over 2 years old now!). $100 in an 8GB RAM upgrade really helped keep ol' betsy alive. Nevertheless, I was very often frustrated how long it was taking to initially boot windows and subsequently load applications / games. I replaced two 7200.10 drives in RAID with this drive and a fresh install of Vista x64. It's really like a whole new computer. I'll spare you any benches since there are a plethora of them online already that would be much more reliable. Unless you're looking to up your FPS, a RAM upgrade and an Intel SSD would give your computer a significant speed boost at a very modest price. 80GB is a bit lean. If I was to do it over again I'd get the 160GB. Vista itself took about 20GB and after games and such I'm > 50GB used (and I've been frugal). If space is a concern, I'd recommend two 1TB greens in a mirror. Anything of importance should stay

Very Solid

Paladin Tools 1556 All-in-One Data & Phone Tool (WE/SS-style)
Paladin Tools 1556 All-in-One Data & Phone Tool (WE/SS-style)

Pros: A very solid tool. It has the latch to let you accurately strip wire and completely crimp your heads. (There's just something satisfying about the clicking sound you get). It has two types of blades: a double-blade for stripping and a single-blade for cutting. The blades are very sharp and work well. It's a heavy duty, hassle-free, comfortable high-quality tool.

Cons: None

Overall Review: If you're an old pro or someone looking to save some cash by crimping your own cables, this tool should be the crimper you get. What's important with a crimping tool is a good wire stripper, and this has a top-notch one. Unless you have one already DO NOT buy a cheaper tool! I promise you that trying to strip the sheathing from a CAT 5 cable with anything sub-standard (such as scissors) will only lead to bad cables and a LOT of frustration. Lastly, don't forget to crimp the sheathing IN the head when you crimp, else your cable won't last long! Happy crimping!
