GIGABYTE BRIX GB-BXi7-4770R 2 x 204Pin Intel Iris Pro graphics 5200 Mini-PC Barebone
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Simple setup
Great CPU and GPU
Decent BIOS
4 USB3 ports
Compact

Cons: USB3 ports aren't full speed
Fan gets a little loud

Other Thoughts: I've had this little unit for about a month now, running it as a compact unit for computer vision experiments. For this the CPU and GPU combo is great. For those interested, the on-chip GPU runs OpenCV and C++ AMP very well. I also have a Point Grey Flea3 USB3 camera hooked up to one of the USB3 ports, streaming 1380x1080 uncompressed images at 60 frames per second. That's quite respectable for a barebones system in this class.
The only downside I noticed is that the USB3 ports are not the full speed ports you might see on a desktop board. In my case, this results in half the framerate I can stream from a USB camera compared to a dedicated USB3 card in my desktop (60 fps BRIX vs. 120 fps desktop). For most users, you won't notice this unless your peripheral(s) can push the USB3 bus to it's limits. The fact that this lower speed USB3 is not documented, and the somewhat loud fan noise are the reasons I docked one egg. Otherwise, it's a great barebones system.

Configuration:
Memory: Crucial 16 GB 1600Mhz

Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Server Memory (Intel Validated ) Model KVR16R11D4/16I
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: 16GB per module
4-Channel ECC memory
8.5 Windows Experience Index score

Cons: Operates as DDR3 1333 with lower end Xeon processors
Latency could be lower (but that could cause higher error rates)

Other Thoughts: Just to correct my previous review: this memory achieves a 8.5 Windows Experience Index.

Some additional benchmarks collected with Aida64:
Read: 15,831 MB/s
Write: 13,893 MB/s
Copy: 16,674 MB/s
Latency: 59.8 ns

System:
CPU Type: 8x Core Intel Xeon E5-2690 (Sandy Bridge-EP)
CPU Platform / Stepping: LGA2011 DP / C2
CPU Clock: 3445.9 MHz (SpeedStep overclock: 19%)
Chipset: Patsburg C600/X79, Intel Sandy Bridge-EP

Pros: 16GB per module

8.1 Windows Experience Index score

Cons: Operates as DDR3 1333 with lower end Xeon processors

Other Thoughts: Upgraded a Dell T7600 workstation with one of these. With a Xeon E5 2.1 GHz processor, the speed topped out at DDR3 1333. However, once the processor was upgraded to a Xeon E5-2690 (2.9GHz), the memory started operating at full DDR3 1600. Stability has been good, and Windows Experience Index score reported was 8.3 with this latter processor.
