This review is from: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL+-F Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1155 Intel C202 DDR3 1333
Pros: IPMI, dual integrated Intel GigE, LSI and Intel integrated RAID, support for up to 32GB of RAM in a mini-atx board? do want.
Cons: Initially had problems with RAM not working with this board. Bear in mind if you purchase this board, you need to use ECC Unbuffered RAM, ECC Registered will _NOT_ work with this board. I bought two 16GB kits of kingston ECC registered RAM and I got BIOS beep codes indicating there was no RAM available. Lovely. Had to RMA it, pay restocking and get unbuffered.
Would have liked to know what kind of RAM was compatible with this board prior to doing that. Went to kingston's memory compatibility site and eventually found that this board requires unbuffered ECC RAM if you want to do ECC on this board.
Software RAID is acting wonky with ESXi. The board is compatible with ESXi, but I'm having a hard time getting my dual terabyte seagate barracudas to make a RAID 1 that ESXi can use. ESXi just sees a bunch of disks (JBOD). Will update if I figure out what's wrong here or if the onboard RAID just doesn't work with ESXi 5
Other Thoughts: pay attention to what RAM the board requires to work. I'm an IT guy through and through, but I made a rookie mistake, and so can you if you don't pay attention.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: is compatible with SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL+-F, performs like a chance. Currently running 4 sticks on a home-grown ESXi server and no problems yet
Cons: Little bit more expensive than registered DIMMS that I initially purchased, which ticked me off. I bought registered dimms to work with my supermicro board initially and was ticked when It wouldn't boot. Pay attention to Kingston's memory compatibility site. Don't try to cheat it like I did... No eggs removed because it was my own stupidity that led to this problem.
Other Thoughts: Good RAMREAD FULL REVIEW
This review is from: ARK 4U-500-CA Black 4U Rackmount Case 3 External 5.25" Drive Bays
Pros: The case is extremely solid, large, easy to work in, and very robust. Had no problems dropping in a Micro ATX board, standard PSU two 1TB hdds, etc and had plenty of room to spare.
Cool that they include a set of "feet" for you to put on the bottom of the case if you like the case, but don't have a rack to mount it in.
Cons: Only con I can think of is that the design isn't toolless, but it's not enough of a gripe for me to drop an egg for it. Also, at this price? I can't really complain.
Other Thoughts: This is a very affordable and spacious server case that will likely outlast many systems you will be placing in it.READ FULL REVIEW
