Pros: Intel server-grade hardware
Consistent, high-speed throughput
Works perfectly in Link Aggregation (LACP) setups in FreeBSD/FreeNAS (184.108.40.206 tested)
Cons: No boot-time firmware/BIOS access/reporting may be an issue for some (not for me).
Other Thoughts: The 'con' listed may not be a con for everyone. The card's features are accessible through management software apparently. Personally I would have liked to have seen at least a 'Hello, everything's fine' BIOS message at boot, but there's nothing. Perhaps that actually IS a feature you can turn on, but we're not running a Windows environment here and thus haven't bothered to try the management software.
For my needs, it's extremely fast and stable in a LACP LAG, and was plug-and-play with FreeBSD 9.x's bundled drivers.
I've yet to have any issue whatsoever with Intel NICs. You get what you pay for.
No unwanted RAID features complicating use / performance
Worked right out of the box, no drivers or config needed (on FreeBSD anyway)
Great speeds, solid throughput (mine is installed in a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot running at x4.)
Cons: Documentation and packaging cover six different models, may be misleading and/or confusing.
BIOS screen flashes by so fast it's nearly impossible to read (not really needed on this card anyway)
Other Thoughts: This was exactly what I needed for my FreeNAS (BSD) build as all my motherboard SATA connections were used up. ZFS doesn't like hardware RAID controllers getting in the way, so I just wanted more SATA III ports and nothing else. I installed it in a spare PCIe 2.0 x16 port that was running at x4 due to a GPU in the primary x16 slot, and throughput rates were very good. The two SATA cables included were too short for my use and did not have clips (but may be just fine for others.)
Conclusion: Does what it says: gives 4 additional SATA III ports, no RAID, inexpensive. Drivers likely not needed on most modern OSes. Install in a minimum PCIe2.0x4 slot for best performance.
Pros: Heat pipe arrangement and high fin density absorb and move a lot of heat.
Included fan moves a large volume of air very quietly.
Loads of useful, quality accessories.
High quality materials and build.
Other Thoughts: This single-tower cousin of the legendary NH-D14 comes with a special version of the NF-A15 fan that runs up to 1500RPM rather than the retail version's maximum of 1200RPM, likely to give it a bit more power to push air through the rather dense cooling fins. Regardless, even at full power and with another (retail) NF-A15 pulling air out the back, it is nearly silent. My hard disks and power supply fan were louder.
Check your case and motherboards' clearances carefully though, this is a very large cooler.
Would recommend this for a mid to large case, and up to a moderate overclock (see the NH-D14 for more extreme air cooling) and when quiet operation at all speeds is important.
So far this cooler has been far more effective, quiet and reliable than the closed-loop liquid cooler it replaced.
Very highly recommended.
