Seagate 600 Pro ST120FP0021 2.5
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

4 out of 5 eggs Pay Attention, Much Lower Warranty than other 600 PRO SSDs 11/09/2013

This review is from: Seagate 600 Pro ST120FP0021 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Enterprise Solid State Drive

Pros: Enterprise MLC

Cons: What isn't clear unless you dig unto the specs is the warranty rating on the 120GB drive is VERY low compared to the other 600 PRO series.

I was looking at the PRO as they have an extended warranty - supposedly due to Seagate overallocating cells to make up for write failures.

Seagate warranty is based on time OR total writes, whichever comes first.

Apparently I'm guessing the 120GB must be the same as a 100GB with less overallocation. Check out warranty for total bytes written:

100GB - 220 TB
120GB - 24 TB (!)
200GB - 520 TB

Given the PRO is advertised as made for enterprise apps this information should be made more prominent. At this time of writing it isn't anywhere on specs page here, and most sites make no mention of the massive warranty tradeoff you give up buying the 120 over the 100

It's all good if you know what you are buying and make an informed decision based on usage. But lack of info is bad.

SUPERMICRO SYS-1018D-73MTF 1U Rackmount Server Barebone LGA 1150 Intel C222 Express PCH DDR3 1600

4 out of 5 eggs LSI SAS controller limited to two RAID volumes 11/09/2013

This review is from: SUPERMICRO SYS-1018D-73MTF 1U Rackmount Server Barebone LGA 1150 Intel C222 Express PCH DDR3 1600

Pros: Does not need linux mdraid / dmraid / etc to use LSI RAID. Any RAID array simply appears as single disk to CentOS / Redhat (and I would guess any other UNIX with LSI 2308 support)

Cons: Limited to two volumes. So if you don't use RAID 10 ... say you want four volumes, each mirrored ... you get to use four drives, then the other four drives you must use some type of md raid, etc. to mirror them.

Other Thoughts: note all 8 hot swap drives are connected to onboard LSI SAS controller. Make sure your OS understands LSI2308
