This review is from: White ECS LIVA 64GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 64GB eMMC Storage
Cons: Linux Compatibility
Locked onto windows 8.1 or Ubuntu
Other Thoughts: TRhis is my second ECS Lva my first was the 32GB version which I quickly realised was way too small for my use case. I use both as WMC PCs (I won't call them HTPCs). For this specific use case these are fantastic. I can't comment on WiFi performance as I wire everything I can. (They both run through "Gigabit" AV2 Homeplugs).
My units run Windows 8.1 with Windows Media Center, Plex and Kodi as the main applications in use. I cannot complain especially at the price I got these units on sale.
Cons: VGA port can be finnicky
Other Thoughts: I was very excited to receive this product, I am very excited to have this product, I am amazed at how much I could do with this product. All of that is dampened by the hoops I had to jump through to update the biuos. I will not go over the nonsense that is HP's policy but it is enough to dock 2 stars of a really nice little server.
I installed another 4GB ECC module I had on hand and installed ESXI 5.5 without issue. I spun up 3 VMs running "A NAS "Distro"", Centos 7 and windows 7. These provide what I call an SMB-in-a-box.
4x3TB RAID 5 array with continuous offsite backup.
Samba 4 Domain Controller (Windows Server 2003 compatible)
Admin PC running RSAT with other domain and storage management tools.
Very pleased with the hardware and hopefully I will never need to contact HP for anything in the future concerning this box. I would buy another if not for HP support.
This review is from: Buffalo BS-GS2008 8-Port Gigabit Green Ethernet Web Smart Switch
Pros: Great feature set for the price
Cons: Not the most intuitive web interface.
Seems to have a password length limit with no indication within the interface.
Other Thoughts: I am quite happy with the feature set on this switch for the price I paid (Bought on sale). I simply needed an LACP capable switch and this fit the bill at a low enough price point. I currently have three 2-port LACP groups connected through this switch that work as expected with iSCSI performance over 200MB/s.
I did have a peculiar issue setting up a password for the web interface. I set up a 10 character password but couldn't log in. After several attempts I dropped the last 2 characters and the login was successful. It seems that their is an 8 character limit which was not indicated anywhere. I wouldn't deploy this in the enterprise but it serves me well on my home network (Hyper-V, ESXi, freeNAS) and may be ideal in SOHOs or SMBs on a budget.
