ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: i bought this open box and newegg doesnt allow reviews for open box, but i must have got a board that someone opened and didnt use or didnt know how to use. paired this with a 4790k which i have clocked at 4.6ghz at 1.296volts. slightly better benchmark scores than my asus mvg and 3770k at 4.6. i mainly bought this board for its atx form factor and onboard dvi, even though i have a discreet card. i wanted flexibility and the amazing red leds. fantastic uefi/bios. works great with my gskill trident x 2x4gb kit at 2600mhz xmp enabled.

Cons: definately not a board for noobs. no voltmeter check points

Other Thoughts: this is my 4th rog board. r2g, r3f, m5g, and now this m7h. mobos are NOT to be considered Plug and Play. if i expected them to be pnp, i would have done an rma on all of them. at first i couldn't get a pci slot to work requiring a cmos reset. then i couldnt get the red ram slots to work which was fixed with a bios update. i could go on. be prepared for troubleshooting and much research with any mobo purchase, not just this one. after the first week of getting this board to function properly, it has been rock solid for the last month and a half. ppl say asus has bad cust. support. i wouldnt know, ive never tried to call them. you shouldnt have to call them unless the board literally melts down or you damage the pins. if you do damage pins, man-up and pay to have them fixed. cant wait for broadwell rog boards!

Antec Twelve Hundred V3 Black Steel ATX Full Tower Unbeatable Gaming Case

Pros: this case has a top fan! if it didnt, all the heat would rise and melt my case!

Cons: heat rises! call the president! i am 6 feet tall. i am so tall that i normally run a fever and my feet are cold!

Other Thoughts: no seriously heat doesnt have time to rise when you have several fans running. only stagnant heat will rise. can you imagine your living room with 3 or 4 giant fans intaking air from outdoors on one side and 2 or 3 giant fans on the other side exhausting air out? if you compared that (TO SCALE) to your computer case it would likely blow you through the room into the exhaust fans and chop you up. its generally warmer on upper levels of a building due to (STACK EFFECT) now why is it colder on top of a mountain??? just buy the antec 1200 already. lol

Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Owned For: more than 1 year

Pros: fastest hdd you can get your hands on

Cons: capable of about half the read/write speed of an ssd.

Other Thoughts: i own the raptor 160 and the raptor 600. i dont remember what i paid for the 160, but the 600 was $230 a few years ago. i use these in my antec 1200 (along side my 840 pro) for music/movies. these raptor drives are easily the best hdd in existence but just cant touch an ssd. as far as reliability, i must be lucky. in the past few years ive purchased these raptors, 840pro, kingston hyper x, wd blue 1tb, seagate barracuda 1tb. all drives still work good. i would love to buy 2 of these raptor 1000's to run in raid 10, as that would be amazing, but i have a hard time justifing the cost. given the cost of this drive and dependant on your setup, better off getting the 840 pro with a wd blue for storage. dont really need blazing fast speed for music, movies, and backup. either way ssd's are the future, the only moving parts in a pc should be fans.
