GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

1 out of 5 eggs When it works it was great 09/26/2013

This review is from: GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: When it was working it handled everything I could throw at it.

Cons: Shortly after I built my pc I started having random freezing issues. I did a mem test and the memory checked out fine. I even switched out to another set of memory and still had the same issue. I updated all of the drives and still had random freezing. Very frustrating. Ended up going back to my old pc while I figure out what the exact problem is. My gut tells me it's probably a bad mem slot.

2 out of 5 eggs Do your research and know what you're getting yourself into. 04/03/2013

This review is from: GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: This MB comes with plenty of ports and interfaces to handle just about any equipment you want to throw at it. It also does that at a pretty good price.

Cons: Please do your research first before purchasing. Do not buy if you're not comfortable flashing the bios on a MB. First of all, I purchased this MB off of newegg and found that I received rev. 1.3. What upset me is that you cannot find that version on Gigabytes site for any support or downloads. You have to do a google search for that exact model number and revision number to find it. It then pulls up a page exactly like all of the other Gigabyte MBs except you can't access this from the normal site. The next step is to update the MB bios. I purchased a AMD AM3+ processor. I knew ahead of time that this MB did not support this processor out of the box but would once you applied the new bios. It took many hours of work for the MB to finally recognize a usb flashdrive as a hard drive capable of interacting with. Make sure your flash drive is also up to date and has nothing on it other than the bios version you're updating to. Here's where it gets fun. The new version of bios that you upload is missing 80% of the drivers that are necessary to interact with the windows install. The next step is to then find the driver downloads and install them off of a usb card since the onboard NIC cannot be detected without the appropriate driver installed. Same with most of the usb ports. The three ports nearest to the PS2 adapter were active. The others were not.

Fast forward a month and I'm having random screen freezes and weird blue screens. I had first thought it was my RAM but it passes all the mem tests on my wife's computer but fails on mine. I have a feeling I'll be RMA'ing this MB before too long.

RAIDMAX Tornado ATX-238WU Black/Blue SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

3 out of 5 eggs just a tad bit small 04/03/2013

This review is from: RAIDMAX Tornado ATX-238WU Black/Blue SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Great price!

Cons: Not a lot of interior space. Make sure you measure your graphics card and check before hand. One of mine did not fit and I had to improvise. The case itself is cheap plastic and very thin sheet metal.

Other Thoughts: Hindsight is always 20/20. Next time I'll spend a little more and get a higher quality case. I was fooled by the sale price at the time. Not a bad case but definitely not a quality one.
