PENTAX K-5 II 16.3 MP DSLR Body Only (Black)
  • neweggOwned For: 1 month to 1 year

5 out of 5 eggs Buy it! 12/26/2013

This review is from: PENTAX K-5 II 16.3 MP DSLR Body Only (Black)

Pros: Image quality, low light focus, high ISO image quality, value, quiet shutter release, penta prism viewfinder, 7 shots/sec continuous, in camera lens correction, compatible with inexpensive older lenses, in-camera shake reduction.

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: As the previous owner of a Canon T3i I can't write this review without a bit of bitterness toward those who rank cameras on all the online websites. Nearly every site ranked Canon or Nikon as the best at all price ranges.. Well after owning the aforementioned T3i I sold it because it struggled to lock focus on slightly flat surfaces, refused to lock focus in dimly lit rooms, was marketed as having a 3.3 shots per second continuous mode, but in reality shot about 3 shots per 10 seconds because the buffer couldn't write to the SD card fast enough, and the image quality of images at 1600 ISO and above were terribly washed out and noisy. After Visiting DP reviews comparison site, and Imaging-resources comparison site I kept coming back to 3 cameras that consistently delivered superior image quality to all others in their price range and much higher. They were the Pentax K-30, K-5ll, and K-5lls. I purchased the K-5lls because I wanted the quietest shutter I could get and I figured not having the anti-aliasing filter was worth taking a chance on. Boy what a camera I got! Weather sealed body, penta-prism viewfinder, 7 shot continuous mode, quiet shutter, and a usable live view mode too! I have two friends who have purchased the K-30 and I can tell you it is also an amazing camera and easily trumps all in its price range and higher as well. Some will say that Canon and Nikon have local sellers and thus better customer service...when I had front focusing issues on my Canon 50mm the local seller could do nothing but send it in to the repair center...same thing you do with Pentax. BTW, with the Pentax in-camera lens correction you don't have to send in your lens for re-calibration!! ...Next I was told that Pentax doesn't offer as many lenses as Canon and Nikon. Well, that may be true, but guess how many lenses the average DSLR user will buy in their lifetime?...2. I might add that what is nice about Pentax is that the old lenses all the way back to late 60's or so still work on the new Pentax DSLR's and I purchased many old lenses between $10-$50 that produce beautiful sharp images.

In concluding I should mention that the Pentax menu was much more intuitive for me and the dual scroll wheels made it much easier to navigate and learn about the camera. Instead of wasting my time navigating and trying to remember menu's and sub menu's on my T3i I was now changing aperture values and shutter speeds and trying different ISO settings and learning how to take pictures!!!

5 out of 5 eggs Incredible 11/19/2013

This review is from: PENTAX K-5 II 16.3 MP DSLR Body Only (Black)

Pros: awesome image quality, incredible low light focusing ability, incredible low light / high ISO ability, solid as a rock build quality, 8 second continuous shooting, two scroll wheels for quick and easy access to primary controls, records images in DNG raw format, amazingly quiet shutter/ mirror slap, in camera lens correction!, weather sealed, bright PENTAPRISM viewfinder.

Cons: Not many places to physically see the camera.

Other Thoughts: I simply can't tell you how nice this camera is. As a previous unhappy owner of the Canon T3i I can tell you that from day one the K-5ll has surprised me with everything it does vastly better than the t3i. It is a bit more expensive, but when I purchased the t3i back in 2011 it was nearly the same price as my K-5ll in 2013. Anyway, this camera is WELL worth the money.

Canon EOS REBEL T3i 5169B003 Black 18.0 MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm IS II Lens

1 out of 5 eggs Terrible value for the money 11/19/2013

This review is from: Canon EOS REBEL T3i 5169B003 Black 18.0 MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm IS II Lens

Pros: Articulating LCD screen

Cons: poor low light focusing, poor low light high ISO image quality, poor center focus on flat surfaces, terrible buffer performance after three continuous shots, noisy shutter(mirror slap), noisy motor recorded during video usage, non-user friendly controls through menu systems vs buttons.

Other Thoughts: Before you choose a DSLR you MUST decide what you want most out of it. Image Quality? Low light, High ISO performance, Video ability? Weather Sealing? Bright View Finder? I THOUGHT i wanted all those things when I purchased the T3i, but now I know at this price point you can't get all those things. So now I know that I want two things. image quality, and low light/high ISO performance. The T3i should not have even made my short list.
