First AMD w/ PCIe 3.0

ASUS TUF SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS TUF SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: UEFI Bios, a zillion connectors including SATA 6.0 Gb/s, PCIe 3.0 and several USB 3.0. No hassle assembling the system on it.

Cons: More than I originally planned to spend, but I decided to err on the side of future-proofing, with PCIe 3.0 and plenty of SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0. Could be overkill though. The IO plate had trouble going in, but that could be the case's fault.

Overall Review: I'm disappointed that, at least so far (May 2013) this is the only AMD motherboard with PCIe 3.0. But graphics cards don't tend to use all that bandwidth yet.

OK for 60 days

GIGABYTE GM-FORCE M7 5 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse
GIGABYTE GM-FORCE M7 5 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse

Pros: Extra buttons, DPI adjustment

Cons: Failed after 2 months, weird shape.

Overall Review: Failure might be just an LED light, so optical mouse can't "see." Fixing it may be possible, but another mouse (different brand this time) was under $20, so this is just one more for the dead PC parts pile.

It works

Silicon Power Ultima II-I Series 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SP016GBUF2M01V1S
Silicon Power Ultima II-I Series 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SP016GBUF2M01V1S

Pros: Much more storage than a DVD and not too far behind a blu-ray, price, looks kinda cool.

Cons: USB 2.0, which is a pro if all you can use is 2.0, but a con if you're constantly filling it up at a slower speed.

Overall Review: I bought this to hit a price point - my build was just enough under budget and I didn't have a working flash drive. I haven't needed it though, since the transition to the new build was pretty painless, but at this price it's hardly a waste and I might find use for it.

Yay a DVD burner

Pros: Does the job, price

Cons: None except that DVD drives are becoming useless. Not blu-ray but I don't really need it.

Overall Review: I was so glad the first time I built a PC that didn't need a floppy drive. When will we get to the point where DVD drives are officially done? Slow, mechanical, with fragile and scratch-prone media.

Completely taken for granted

TP-LINK TL-WN723N Wireless N150 Mini USB Adapter, 150 Mbps, w/ WPS Button, IEEE 802.11b/g/n, WEP, WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 10 (32 bit & 64 bit)
TP-LINK TL-WN723N Wireless N150 Mini USB Adapter, 150 Mbps, w/ WPS Button, IEEE 802.11b/g/n, WEP, WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 10 (32 bit & 64 bit)

Pros: Fast, easy to set up, 802.11 b/g/n, small (hard to knock out of the USB port). Price. Set it and forget it.

Cons: White against my gunmetal black case?

1600 **OR** 8 CAS

Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT8G3D1608DT1TX0
Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT8G3D1608DT1TX0

Pros: Price, fast, maxes out Windows Home Premium (16 GB), heat spreaders

Cons: The ad said 1600 with a CAS latency of 8. Out of the box it looks like it does one or the other. Other RAM in the same price range says 1600 with 10 or sometimes 9 latency. I don't really care; it's fast enough and was a better price at the time.
