This review is from: NETGEAR ProSAFE 8-Port Gigabit Smart Managed Switch (GS108T) - Lifetime Warranty
Pros: Works great as a dumb switch or paper weight
Cons: Mistakenly bought 2 of these instead of the GS108E. Was happy to find out that there is a web based utility instead of a Prosafe configuration client. Connected a laptop to the GS108T (not on a network). Used the included utility to find the device on the default IP 192.168.0.249. Changed the laptop's IP to the same subnet and opened the browser and logged into the admin panel with no problem.
Browsed to the VLAN 802.1Q advanced menu and started to add my VLANs. Managed to add 2 VLANs before the browser connection timed out. Couldn't ping the 192.168.0.249 IP, and a nmap of the entire 192.168.0.0/24 network showed nothing. A couple power cycles and restarting the laptop did nothing so I had to use the "Factory Default" reset button on the unit.
Second time around (same steps) fared somewhat better. I was able to add VLANs and tag/untag appropriate ports, but when I tried to assign the PVIDs the device stopped responding again. Pinging the 192.168.0.249 IP gives me nothing, and the Prosafe config utility turns up nothing. Nmap and snmp snooping shows nothing as well. Factory reset again and now I can't even find the device with the Prosafe utility.
Same results with the second unit. Both purchased brand new from Newegg and unboxed by me. Sending them back for the GS108E's (which may be more inconvenient to configure but at least they work).
