This review is from: D-Link 5-Port EasySmart Gigabit Ethernet Switch - Lifetime Warranty (DGS-1100-05)
Pros: The features that this switch promises are quite impressive in paper but my experience with it was not so good.
It is one of the cheaper managed/smart switches on the market. There are quite a few options to tweak around using the supplied smart console software or the browser interface. I personally liked the browser based management. To utilize the controls I had to change the IP address of one of my computers to 10.90.90.x and login to the default IP 10.90.90.90, use the default password 'admin', change the switche's ip to DHCP and revert the computer to DHCP as well.
The construction of the switch is all metal. They provide screws to mount it to a wall as well as rubber feet if selected as table top use.
The limited lifetime warranty is good.
Cons: The unit worked fine while conducting daily mundane tasks like internet, gaming, simple file transfers etc but as soon as I tried to do some heavy file transfers it really slowed down. I was trying to move 64 GB worth of data and it completely stopped working, I had to hard reset it to get it back to work. I have other cheaper 8 port switches which perform way better under even higher volumes of file transfers.
Other Thoughts: Very rich in features but poor performance, I don't know if I received a faulty unit or the problem is generic. With my experience I would not recommend this for any heavy serious usage, for light usage there are other far better and way cheaper options.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: Now I have 3 of these in raid 5. Haven't have a single hiccup.

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102
Pros: As it is advertised for use with a mac it comes preloaded with HFS+ file system. In order to get it to work with windows you will need HFS+ drivers. Drivers for windows are available at Seagate's website. Linux mint negatively supports read only mount, but in order to write files on Linux box, journaling should be turned off.
This little drive is very fast. It is faster than my buffalo ultra slim 500 GB portable which is very similar to this Seagate in terms of features and usage.
Crystal disk mark results:
Seq read 114.4 MB/s Seq write 114.5 MB/s
512k random read 41.8 MB/s 512K r andom write 52.6 MB/s
ON real world test it really excelled than the aforementioned competing product. I was able to achieve 89.4 MB/s write speed while transferring 104.4 GB from my raid 5 storage unit.
The drive uses micro USB 3.0 port which is very sturdy compared to previous gen micro USB 2.0. USB 3 makes this drive not only fast but also backward compatible. Some fellow eggxperts have mentioned that the connection port and cable is proprietary which is not true. The port is the standard micro USB 3 so any aftermarket micro USB cable would work if you lose the provided cable.
Design wise this drive is very slick. It is thin and light weight which makes it ideal for travel. I might as well admit that I think it is beautiful.
On the box it says for 2 years warranty but on newegg's product detail page it is listed as 3 years. I would assume the retail box warranty to be the actual one. Newegg might have to fix the issue. Regardless 2 years warranty is better than some other manufacturers are providing.
Cons: My only concern is the length of USB cable. It is only 18 inches which makes a little bit tedious to work with when the front usb ports are placed on top of the front panel of a 22 Inch high case.
Other Thoughts: A very well made and designed portable HDD. Works with mac as well as PC. I definately recommend it to anybody looking for portable storage not oly for mac but for PC users as well.READ FULL REVIEW
