4 out of 5 eggs Not bad for my first WC system 06/09/2008

This review is from: VANTEC STG-100 All-in-one Water Cooling Kit

Pros: You get a lot of stuff for the money, blocks for most everything. The pump and tank are cool. The tank has three blue and red flashing LED's. You can unplug them if you don't like it looking like a car accident. I replaced the LED's with high power white ones, looks awesome. The pump is small but strong.

Cons: The waterblocks are bare copper with an aluminum water jacket, along with the alum. radiator, this mixing of dissimilar metals causes them to corrode. As others have stated, it look as though aluminum particles are beeing stripped from the jacket and then will travel to the copper where it sticks as a sandy like crud. The copper also shows corrosion but a little less severe. This prosses has caused significant dammage to the water contact surfaces of the aluminum.

Other Thoughts: It seems the only solution to this problem is to have your system 100% copper, or 100% aluminum. However, other companys have started to gold or nickel plate the copper to fend off corrosion in a mixed metal system. You can, however, get decent life out of this system if you flush the coolant every month or so, and service the blocks every few months. Some may see that is too much of a pain, but for the money spent I would not complain, and the way I see it, water coolong is more complex than air, therfore will need more work to maintain. Besides, I know you air cooled people have to clean the dust out of your heatsinks and fans every now and again, right?
