Excellent NAS

QNAP TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS
QNAP TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS

Pros: This NAS does everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Has very good transfer rates which can really take advantage of Gigabit ethernets. Simply versatile. Auto IP filtering which is great for those script kiddies that want to try and break into your FTP server.

Cons: Price, obviously.

Overall Review: I have tried out a few other NAS, including D-link, before settling on this NAS. I feel I made the right decision with going with Qnap and have had no regrets.

Most Critical Review

Great Router, but flawed

ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router Dual Band N600 Multimedia Ultra Slim Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n support USB Storage, Print and Media Server
ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router Dual Band N600 Multimedia Ultra Slim Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n support USB Storage, Print and Media Server

Pros: Solid transfer performance and great range, never had any issue with connecting.

Cons: Can not sustain long term idle RDP sessions. My work requires that I be connected remotely to multiple servers. Whenever one of my sessions is idle for as little as 5 minutes, this router drops the connection. I have confirmed the router is the source because I am able to connect my compute directly to the modem and the problem disappears.

Overall Review: I've tried calling their support about the issue but got nowhere. They have known about this problem for a while, but after multiple firmware updates, have not fixed it. Dropping connection like this is unfortunately a common issue, but usually for cheaper routers that have less memory. It should not be an issue for a router such as this, yet it is.

Flawed Product

Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC, dual-band, 2x2 Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.0 Mini PCI Express combo Adapter - 867 Mbps+300Mbps - Internal
Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC, dual-band, 2x2 Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.0 Mini PCI Express combo Adapter - 867 Mbps+300Mbps - Internal

Pros: The WiFi works as I would expect. Had a slight problem with my strength meter alternating between high and low signals, but a driver update seems to have fixed it.

Cons: Bluetooth is a failure. Nothing appear in the device manager.

Overall Review: I tested the device on 3 laptops, a MSI that runs Windows 8.1, an Asus that was on Windows 8, and an Acer that was still using windows 7. None of these computers could see the bluetooth component in the device manager. I bought one of these and when the BT did not work, I RMA'd it. When the new one came in, same problem. At this time I am undecided on whether or not I will RMA this one because if I keep sending them back, I will end up losing too much money in shipping costs.

Works as expected

Zotac ZBOX-AD04-U AMD A50M (Hudson M1) Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System
Zotac ZBOX-AD04-U AMD A50M (Hudson M1) Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Very low profile and quiet. The only time I hear it is when everything else in the room is off and it's the only thing running. Runs Win7 64 with XBMC like a champ. Everything is smooth and outputs video at a very clean 1080p24. Draws very little power. I used to use my PS3 for a media center, but the zbox is quieter and uses less power to do the same job, an I think the image is better.

Cons: The IR dongle is a separate USB module. I would have liked to have seen one built in like they have on the Zbox Mini's.

Overall Review: I have only experienced a few crashes and other problems but I was able to determine that it was a problem with the RAM and not the zbox. Since changing out the ram, it has been rock solid. I have not had a problem with overheating. In fact, while playing a movie (it's main job), the unit is barely warm. And contrary to other reviews, setting up a Harmony remote is extremely easy. You just have to program it as a zbox AD-04 and not a standard MCE remote. Logitech does have the correct codes. And contrary to another review, this device can output 5.1ch audio. I use the HDMI to my receiver and have not had any difficulties getting 5.1 audio.

Good, but flawed

ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router Dual Band N600 Multimedia Ultra Slim Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n support USB Storage, Print and Media Server

Pros: Great range, good speed, easy to use interface.

Cons: Drops RDP connections when idle for 10 minutes. This is too common of an issue with cheaper, especially routers with low memory, but for the price of this router, it should not happen. Support from Asus is pretty much useless on this. I brought the issue to their attention and they said they would investigate and that I would get a call with results. Never called. My work depends on the use of RDP (internet hosting site) and I must maintain long RDP sessions. So this function has forced me to look elsewhere for a reliable router.

Overall Review: If you don't use RDP, it's a great router. But if you like to use Remote Desktop, You should avoid this router. Heck, I can't even Remote into my main computer from my laptop sitting on my couch on the same network. Other routers work fine.
