3 out of 5 eggs WIndows 7 Pro 01/21/2015

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: Windows works for most things, even dual screen, and programming.

Cons: Windows is slow to load and its programs like Word are also slow. Windows is also more expensive than Linux and prone to BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). It is difficult to disable features such as Internet Explorer and Media Player, which are just too much trouble to use. Recently, I have noticed that every down load wants to automatically update and add a screen saver, this is a way into your system without you being aware that these programs are monitoring your computer use. I think Windows could do a better job of protecting the consumer by not allowing things through the Firewall, except that they also monitor all your use. These problems are not as prevalent in other operating systems Apple, Chrome, Android, all based in Linux (well maybe not Apple). Windows was an innovator and industry leader, but recently they have impeded growth by forcing the use of Direct X and their own proprietary software for Xbox. In a industry that is grow or die, the next big markets are India and China. Google, Apple and Linux are poised to grow into these markets while Windows pricing policy will prevent them from any further growth and they will be the next "BlockBuster Video". Too big to change, too big to fail.

Pros: The quad core, and GPU's are fast and don't get bogged down with dual screen configuration even in HDMI HD.

Cons: The Manufacturer failed to release drivers for HSA and so the performance is no better than the earlier A8 versions. The chip will not load Linux at all. Any Linux. It locks up in a black screen. The cooler it comes with is nearly useless, even for watching movies in dual screen, it overheats. It only works with Windows and then not in HSA. More money for a gimmick that is less effective than the cheaper Trinity and Richland chips. AMD's complaint department sent an email telling me to just load the new Linux drivers..duh without a working VGA screen nothing gets loaded. I selected the A8 for its lower power and TDP so as to avoid the cooling problems with 100W chips. This is only for multimedia and watching TV so the load is relatively light on the APU. So even configured at 65W the chip over heats at a light load. So don't be fooled by the hype, without the proper drivers Windows and Linux never take advantage of the HSA and multi core GPU. I gave them one egg because it kinda works in Windows.

Other Thoughts: I have a Linux system (Ubuntu 14.10 and Linux Mint 17.1) that runs the A8-5500 (Trinity) flawlessly. Fast and no overheating. It handles dual screens without a problem and works for light gaming. No problems with the drivers.

ASRock FM2A75M Pro4+ FM2+ / FM2 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: This mobo lives up to it's reputation, easy to install, loaded with features, reliable, and some great software that comes with it. I bought it to use with the new Kaveri but untill I get one I am using an old A8-5500. It works amazing. I haven't set up the home cloud yet but will review that when I have time.

Cons: No sound on VGA or HDMI.

Other Thoughts: The best of the FM2+ lot of boards. You can pay more but not get more.
