Lenovo Q190 (57316187) Desktop PC Celeron 1017U (1.60GHz) 4GB DDR3 1TB HDD Windows 8
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

4 out of 5 eggs Works well for my intentions 07/13/2013

This review is from: Lenovo Q190 (57316187) Desktop PC Celeron 1017U (1.60GHz) 4GB DDR3 1TB HDD Windows 8

Pros: (I'll keep this short since the provided description speaks for itself)

Great form-factor.

Great specs for the price.

Included with this model:

Handy keyboard / track-thingy. "Optical ScrollPoint"

Removable DVD+/-RW drive. So it ends up being only half the height, if you need it to be super thin.

Handy, clever VESA mount included for mounting the pc to the back of your (compatible) tv/ monitor.

Cons: Analog audio out port is on the front, opposite side of the video ports, but this would be useful for actual headphones vs desktop speakers. I would have liked to see two outputs, front and rear, I suppose.

The disadvantage of the snap-on dvd drive is that it takes up a USB port when installed.

So does the kb/mouse. It has its own little USB receiver that stashes in the battery compartment of the remote. I haven't tried to figure out if its bluetooth, but it's more likely proprietary RF. It would be nice if it were BT, or better yet, built-in, so you wouldn't have to use another port to add BT for a media remote, etc.

The rear USB ports are USB-2 (4 each) and the fronts are USB-3 (2 each), I think it would be more logical (with less cable-clutter) for the rears to have two USB-3 & two USB-2, and the front two be USB-2. I imagine one would usually connect something like a large-capacity HDD with USB-3 connected to the rear, and the fronts would only need to be USB-2 for flash drives or cameras, which are more likely to be USB-2. That seems it would be a more likely scenario.

I guess there's only so much room on the back panel; it is very small. Also, I could understand the RD could end up cheaper to just stick the USB-3 up front and leave the rear how it was in the other models. Oh well.

I am really used to SSD's. I have them in my home desktop, my laptop and my work desktop. So, this 5400rpm feels very sluggish to me, and I can only imagine what it will be like in a year or so once win-dose slows it down. I suppose I will just replace the HDD with an SSD when it gets to that point, and perhaps get an external enclosure for this 1TB. Clearly the price of this little guy would be more with an SSD with decent capacity.

The kb/mouse thingy is okay, but I would really love it if it worked like a Wii; "magic wand" gyroscope mouse. The price would obviously be more... I guess I can see why they just went with this option. Its just a little IR sensor, like the under side of a mouse, and it's a button for left-click (there are also other larger dedicated L-click and R-click buttons). Since you are using your thumb you can only move the cursor a little bit at a time unless you run it full throttle, but then its hard to be precise.

I really am more satisfied than dissatisfied with this pc! I just like to nitpick!

Other Thoughts: I don't know if this was a Windows 8 issue, or if it is specific to this machine, but when I first powered it on it booted into an "Admin" user state, but its "working-spinner" was spinning on the welcome page for over 15 minutes, with no progress / info bar. I was forced to hard-power down. When I powered it back up, it wouldn't let me log in! I clicked on the only user icon available, the Admin, but it said that my account was locked out (or something similar)! So, I restarted it, and it booted into a wallpaper mode, where it let me create a user account. Very confusing. I would really be lost if I were an average user. I'm just glad I didn't have to run it through a recovery before I ever got to use it! Again, this issue is probably a windows 8 thing.

The VESA mount only works (that I can see) if you have the DVD drive attached. I guess that's not a huge deal, unless you really need your monitor that much closer to the wall. Also, from my experience, most monitors use the VESA holes for the table top stand, so you won't likely be able to mount this to a monitor. But it should work with most flat-panel TV's. Obviously they must be table-standing, not mounted to the wall.

iRam 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered Dual Channel Kit Memory For Apple Mac Pro Model IR4GMP667K
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Cheap, works 99%.

Cons: Faulty heat sensor (online diagnostic) puts the MacPro into limbo when restarting, (goes down, won't come back up) forcing me to hard shut down, which I believe has damaged one of my HDD's (great support from Seagate, AR RMA in before any loss of data)

THIS PRODUCT WILL DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER, DO NOT BUY.

I HAVE EMAILED iRAM TWICE WITH ZERO RESPONSE.

Yes, I checked my spam. Kingston is the same price, I haven't tried it, but I recommend it over this iCrap.

iRam, I hope you're reading this (since you don't read your emails) and maybe then you'll get me a working replacement. (I would like a refund, but I accept that it's too late for that.)

LIFETIME WARRANTY DOES NO GOOD IF THEY CAN'T EVEN WRITE BACK! SCAM!

Other Thoughts: Took me a while to figure out it was the RAM causing this. Had to phrase my google search just right to find the right answer. I think this RAM might also have something to do with my system not Sleeping when it should; I haven't had enough time to test that out. Very possible. OS X does not report any issues. If you have a similar problem, just shut-down, take out the RAM, start-up and it should Restart like normal. Also if the RAM is installed and cold (system only up for a few minutes) then it should work. RAM hot = restart limbo. DON'T BUY.

Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

Pros: Capacity/price: very good. Great for a mass storage, or a back-up drive.

Cons: Slow speeds might be the culprit regarding a recurring problem that started when I installed this HDD... jury is still out.

Other Thoughts: The issue is recording TV. I regularly record HDTV with an EyeTV Hybrid, on my Mac Pro 1,1. Usually little to no issues. I installed this drive so I wouldn't have to share space with my iTunes library. Now, NBC Thursdays almost always stop about 15 minutes into the first or second show. I haven't studied this close enough to know what the exact problem is. When I'm there and watching, no problem. When I'm downstairs playing PS3, it goofs. This never happened with my 7200rpm 1.5TB drive as the recording disk. But, like I said, I don't know for sure. Seems to work fine when I'm playing these HDTV recordings. And NBC Thursdays are the ONLY time this happens. Odd. Over-all, I recommend.
