Update the firmware!

ASUS P7H55-M PRO LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P7H55-M PRO LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Solid motherboard, good assortment of ports, lots of options to tweak in the bios. Thumbdrive bios updates are very handy.

Cons: Out of the box had 0401 BIOS without AHCI support! All Sata ports were being run as IDE. ASUS Website was horrible for finding and updating firmware.

Overall Review: In order to find the proper firmware you have to go to the *product* page on ASUS main site, the support site has out-of-date information. In order to get the SATA ports going a full speed you need BIOS 0601 or higher.

ICY DOCK 4 Bay USB 3.0/ eSATA External HDD Enclosure with 120mm Cooling Fan - Black Vortex MB174U3S-4SB
ICY DOCK 4 Bay USB 3.0/ eSATA External HDD Enclosure with 120mm Cooling Fan - Black Vortex MB174U3S-4SB

Pros: - Recognized by linux - Works

Cons: - Drive serial numbers are we-written by the USB interface, haven't checked the esata. - The drive caddy requires special countersunk screws which are included, but don't lose them! - Hotplug didn't seem to work with USB2, but worked fine under USB3.

Overall Review: Dimensions of the unit strongly suggest that it would fit in 3x 5.25" drive bays if you took the feet off the bottom. So fat it's working like a charm as JBOD for a zfs pool backup ( 4x 4T HGST in raidz-1 ). EDIT: After spending a week with it the device has really started to show some flaws. Over USB3 UASP the device was able to move more than 100MB/s but when I swapped older disk into it there were problems. Any time there was a timeout on one disk the whole unit seemed to redetect causing read and write failures on the other drives. Using it in eSATA mode is 50% slower but does not suffer from this problem.

Tripp Lite Model U209-000-R 5 ft. USB to Serial Adapter (USB-A Male to DB9M) Male to Male

Pros: - Inexpensive - Works with chromebook ( and linux of course )

Cons: - None

Solid unit

TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 Dual Band Wireless N750 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 450Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch
TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 Dual Band Wireless N750 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 450Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Immediately upgraded to OpenWRT trunk without any issues. 128 MB of ram gives plenty of room to run apps. I have mine running a hurricane electric IPv6 tunnel, QoS, OpenVPN for work access, AirPlay ( with USB audio ), and transparent web caching household embedded devices. It does this without breaking a sweat.

Cons: About the only negative comment I can make is that the flash is only 8mb, so you are limited on the internal storage. If you need more you can take advantage of the dual USB ports to add additional space to the unit.

Overall Review: Picked up one initially, but ended up buying a spare as well. The feature of hardware NAT is mostly marketing, I don't know of any software that really takes advantage of that hardware but the unit is more than fast enough to handle everything I have pushed through it onto my 15/1 cable connection.

Quiet is an understatement

Western Digital WD Green WD15EARS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet, large capacity, low power draw.

Cons: Not the fastest drive on the market, but that's not why people buy "green" drives.

Overall Review: Using 2x mirror for my low wattage server. When I first plugged them in I had to double check they had actually spun up by placing my hand on them. With two in the system my power draw ( measured from the wall ) will fluctuate up to 10W ( 5W each I presume ). This is extraordinary in terms of capacity per watt. It's not going to win any awards for speed, but it will get 70-90MB/s read or write without making a lot of heat or noise.

Works great

SeaSonic SS-300ES Bronze 300 W ATX12V V2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Works, efficient, power switch ( when was the last time you had a PSU with a power switch ), good assortment of connectors.

Cons: No power cord, but that's to be expected.

Overall Review: Since it's hard to see from the pictures. There are 4x SATA power cables, at least 4x molex, and at least 2x mini-molex. This should be more than enough for systems that will fit comfortably in a 300W system. Very satisfied with the purchase.
