4 out of 5 eggs update on ECC support 12/01/2013

This review is from: ASRock C226 WS ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C226 DDR3 1600/1333

Pros: BIOS 1.10 supports ECC

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am the author of the review from 9/15/2013 who complained about lack of ECC support.

Unlike the BIOS that was available on 9/15, the newest BIOS 1.10 now recognizes ECC memory and offers an option to enable/disable it. Therefore my main reason to complain is no longer valid.

I have however been unable to verify that ECC actually works. As I said on 9/15, I have a known defective DIMM module that causes correctable ECC errors on a couple of other motherboards in my possession. I installed this module on the C226WS. After several days of testing, the BIOS error log did not record any ECC errors, whereas I would observe 2-3 errors/day on other boards. On the other hand, I did not observe any memory corruption either. Thus my tentative conclusion so far is that the C226WS is silently correcting ECC errors, or maybe my "defective" DIMM happens to run just fine with C226WS. Either way I have no reason to complain.

1 out of 5 eggs ambiguous/missing ECC support 09/15/2013

This review is from: ASRock C226 WS ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C226 DDR3 1600/1333

Pros: Plenty of I/O capacity

Cons: It is unclear whether the advertised ECC support works at all. I have a Xeon E3-1220v3 and ECC memory. The BIOS does not show any ECC support at all. I have a known defective ECC DDR3 DIMM that I use for testing. With other motherboards, linux clearly reports that memory errors are corrected when I use the defective DIMM. With this motherboard, I don't see any message at all.

The only reason to buy this "workstation" board is for ECC support, otherwise cheaper alternatives exist. Until a BIOS update comes out that clearly shows ECC support, I would not recommend that anybody buy this board.

ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
  • Verified Owner

Pros: This board works fine with linux, except for onboard audio. Other people reported problems with UEFI booting but everything worked for me.

Cons: I managed to break one pin in the USB3 connector. I suppose that weak pins are a fault of the USB3 standard rather than of this particular board, but it's still annoying.
