5 out of 5 eggs Asus ROG Maximus VII Hero 1150 01/03/2015

This review is from: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Asus Quality. Works fine with an i7 4790K. Very Nice Product. I always like Asus Products. Setup was a breeze. Follow instructions, take your time, and sort through any issues you may have as most problems are mostly but not always end user errors.

Cons: Bios seems a little difficult for me to understand. It goes by offsets instead of actual voltages. All my AMD builds went by actual voltages and not offset voltages. I will watch a video on the bios to learn more.

Other Thoughts: I would buy again. Be SURE to install the Ai Suite 3 and the other software on the disc also. The Ai Suite 3 is needed to make fan speed adjustments as my trusty program "Speedfan" was not allowing changes in fan RPM. Load AI Suite 3 and run Auto Tune first... as this measures the lowest and maximum fan speeds your fans are capable of. Then you can play with Manual Mode or Fan Speed Curves.
Also if you have a glitch in your mouse movement or jumpy games, I had a mouse go bad just after installing this motherboard. Someone said try the top two USB ports rather than the bottom blue 3.0 ports... That didn't work for me. Its the mouse! Drove me crazy for 2 hours as I didn't want to believe it was a new motherboard issue. I am using the top 2 usb ports for the mouse and keyboard, but that mouse acts goofy on a spare pc also... so its the mouse!

5 out of 5 eggs INTEL i7 4790K Bragging Rights :) 01/03/2015

This review is from: Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 Desktop Processor BX80646I74790K

Pros: Runs fast! I primary bought this to tinker due to boredom. I needed the highest per core performance cpu since the game I play (Guild Wars 2) is heavily dependent on per core power. This 4790k has more per core performance than the 8 core extreme Intel. If you need 8 cores go with the 8 core extreme Intel, which would shine at Video Rendering, but if your depending on per core performance this is the best I can find to date with the strongest cores. Guild Wars 2 runs on "Best Appearance" and "Supersampling" at 80-160fps most places in game paired with two AMD 7970 GPU's in Crossfire.

Cons: Its a tiny cpu around 1" x 1"??? and I paid $299 for it?? It's so tiny! At least I got it before the price jumped a bit.

Other Thoughts: I would buy this again! I paired this up with the Asus ROG Hero VII motherboard and it works flawlessly. Don't use the stock heatsink.. I did for 1 day and temps were 45c idle and 90c under load. I figured out that a Thermaltake Frio with 1156 brackets will work on 1150 sockets. The Frio keeps it at 31c idle and 72c under load. I just ordered a Corsair H100i which should knock down the temps even better. It is fun to tinker!

5 out of 5 eggs 970 Gaming Board 10/08/2014

This review is from: MSI 970 Gaming AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Looks sweet! Works like a champ! I am happy.

Cons: Killer LAN would not work at first using auto install disc on Win7 x64bit

see below.......

Other Thoughts: Killer Lan Issues. If you are using Win7 and can't get KillerLAN to work.... and the Auto install disc says successful, but still no LAN up and running? Try using the device manager in windows 7 and update the drivers manually using the included disc. I found a folder that only had XP32bit and XP64bit drivers for KillerLan on the disc...so I tried the XP64bit drivers and it worked on Win7x64bit..... now I have the LAN working fine on Win7x64bit
