Most Favorable Review

best drive i've owned

BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver
BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / Firewire400 / Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: quiet, sturdy, reliable- what else is there?

Cons: none so far.

Overall Review: i've had so many external drives fail on me within a few months it is not even funny. this one has worked hard for several months and hasn't had any issues at all. i'll probably buy more of these.

Most Critical Review

another dud from iomega

iomega UltraMax Hard Drive, eSATA/FireWire 800/FireWire 400/USB 2.0, 750GB
iomega UltraMax Hard Drive, eSATA/FireWire 800/FireWire 400/USB 2.0, 750GB

Pros: good connection options, probably good quality hard drive inside....

Cons: after needing four minimax drives replaced within a year, i was upgraded to an ultramax (which seemed a positive solution at the time). now the ultramax has started making the grinding noise that all my other iomegas have made after a month or so. sounds as though the fan completely broke, and now i will be without a drive again for the 5th time in a year while iomega processes my exchange and sends me another dud.

Overall Review: i know the drives inside are probably good quality, but the fans and enclosures made by iomega are so cheap and unreliable that their products are useless. i value the reviews on newegg greatly and am warning everyone out there- don't buy an Iomega. (i have a fantom and a buffalo drive setup in the exact same system and have had zero problems with those).

Iomega will not take responsibility

iomega MINIMAX 500GB 7200 RPM 3.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire400 External Hard Drive Model 33746
iomega MINIMAX 500GB 7200 RPM 3.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire400 External Hard Drive Model 33746

Pros: Matches mac mini.

Cons: I wrote the review below this one, regarding 4 of these drives dying within a year. After reading Iomega's response blaming this on my environment/possible power fluctuations I am posting these thoughts to try to steer people in the right direction.

Overall Review: I do not have an environmental issue. I have buffalo and fantom external drives that have been sitting right next to the iomegas for the past year. Those two drives have not had a single problem while the minimax is pretty much useless and makes loud noises until it fails. when a product is good i say so and when it is bad people have a right to know. the enclosure/fan for this drive, produced by iomega, are horribly unreliable in the face of other drives working flawlessly.

worst drive i've ever owned

iomega MINIMAX 500GB 7200 RPM 3.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire400 External Hard Drive Model 33746
iomega MINIMAX 500GB 7200 RPM 3.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire400 External Hard Drive Model 33746

Pros: matches mac mini.

Cons: i did not purchase this drive from newegg, but felt obligated to post a review for this item. i am on my 4th replacement drive within one year, after losing countless amounts of personal data. every replacement they have sent has died within a month. worst drive i have ever seen, what more can i say?
