Nice little motherboard
Pros: This MicroATX form factor board is is great for building a semi-mobile computer. It has proven to be very stable (running Windows 2000 Pro and SuSE 10.1 x64), and it is Easy to update bios with @bios utility. Also very easy to install system drivers. The CMOS setup is detailed an easy to work with, AFTER you press CTRL+F1 to unhide the advance options like Advance Chipset features.
Cons: My biggest complaint with this mobo is with it's auto-recognition of RAM. It recognized My GEIL DDR2-800 (GX21GB6400UDC) as DDR2-667, and had all the Latenties wrong. Also, while minor to me, may be important to others, this board will NOT overclock with Easy Tune 5.
Overall Review: Unless you are trying to build a small computer, I would recommend stepping up to the full size ATX model GA-M55plus-S3G, as it does support EasyTune overclocking. Just as "other thoughts": The onboard ethernet did not work with SuSE, only windows. Also, it seems like the Motherboard should have fans on the heatsinks, as the bridges run rather warm, (around 111*F)
Terrible Customer Service
Pros: Nice specs on paper
Cons: Asus Customer Service and issues with support. This model board has an issue with Power Supplies. Asus refuses to attempt to duplicate the problem. The issue is with power supply specifications. According to Asus, this board will work with a version 2.1 or higher power supply. What I have found is the only power supply I can use is a less than $25 V2.0 SYSLOGIC. I have tried an XFX PRO 650W, and a Corsair CX430. Both of which when the system tries to resume from standby, it will power itself off. I have spent hours - I'd guess in the neighborhood of 8-12 - trying to resolve this issue. I sent video proof of my findings, and am still getting a run around. I have not been this disappointed in any technology companies level of service since the mid 90's. I personally would not recommend ever doing business with Asus. I've spent several thousand on their products between laptops and motherboards in the last couple years. The one time I have a problem and need help, I cannot get any.
Good Fast Ram
Pros: Very happy with system performance. Runs fast and cool. Not important, but the orange heat spreaders look cool with my Gigabyte Mobo. Seems like very good memory for the price, once you get the Motherboard to recognize it correctly. Computer run STABLE.
Cons: My Gigabyte Mobo, Model #: GA-M51GM-S2G does not identify them correctly. Must go into CMOS and manually set RAM speed and Latencies.
Overall Review: I am not a gamer, so I do not know how this RAM performs in gaming applications. It had done exceptionally well for me in terms of DVD ripping/encoding, overall Windows performance, and SuSE 10.1 runs fast and stable.
