Acer: decent prod for the $

Acer 19" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI X193W+BD
Acer 19" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI X193W+BD

Pros: Firing on all pixels! High resolution in a comparatively small screen dimension, which means smaller pixel size providing very good sharpness. Widescreen.

Cons: Minimal resources devoted to designing the controls (buttons).

Overall Review: Acer provides good bang for the buck ..and NEWEGG plays a big role with excellent deals rotations and quick out-the-door 'free' shipping.

Most Critical Review

Purchased in February 2016... one FAILED in May 2016.

Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Hit or miss. Seagate is no longer on my go-to list. Never again. No thanks, Newegg.

Cons: Purchased two in February 2016... one already FAILED in May 2016. Seagate is no longer a reputable drive manufacturer. The 3TB drive class action lawsuit against Seagate also should include the 2TB NAS 5900 drive. I am beyond angry.

A hardware issue, not firmware....

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.11 ST31000333AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Uhmmm, good price?

Cons: Seagate hasn't recalled this series.

Overall Review: It seems to me if this really is a 'firmware' issue the problem(s) would exist immediately after install. The fact that many 7200.11 drives randomly fail *over time* may indcate *hardware* or *manufacturing* related issues. Firmware programming doesn't 'go bad' over time. Flash memory in which the firmware is stored can go bad. Or is it bad cache RAM, failing after many heat / cool cycles? Some people report a throughput decrease with the firmware upgrade ... which may indicate the cache calls are modified / diabled in the new code? Or is it failing solder joints or failing controller chips ... again, heat / cool cycle related? All speculation of course, but something seems quite fishy.

DIR-825 - wireless @ 300mbps!

D-Link Xtreme N Dual-Band Gigabit Router (DIR-825) Wireless N600
D-Link Xtreme N Dual-Band Gigabit Router (DIR-825) Wireless N600

Pros: Gigabit switch. Narrow power transformer ('wall wart') allows you to plug it in-between other plugs on a power strip. Easy to configure manually or by using the included software. Comes with vertical mount stand (for those of you who do not like the blue LEDs, mount it vertical so the LEDs are face down - u can still see then flashing on the black stand because there is a 1/4" spacing but at least they're not flashing directly in your eyes). Also is wall mountable. D-Link uses ege-crate style cardboard packaging - adequate.

Cons: I needed to update the firmware from 1.0 to 1.1.

Overall Review: This router is rated 2nd best overall @ Smallnetbuilder's site. If you wait a few weeks I'm sure you can get it cheaper but Newegg combo'd an 802.11n (not draft 2) PC card!
