This review is from: Plextor M5M 256GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) PX-256M5M
Pros: Super stable - in two years I've never had any issues with this drive, no failures, no incompatibilities, etc. No problems whatsoever.
Fast - faster than you'll ever need. The only time this drive's full speed is used is when transferring data between the drive and RAM. My other hard drives are HDD's so the speed of transferring data between this and them is limited by the HDD's
Great capacity - it's plenty for a C drive. I have windows 10 and battlefield 4 (64.6GB!) on it and several other programs such as photoshop and premiere pro, and there's still 100GB of free space.
Cool - This drive does not heat up like some mSATA drives do. I've never experienced it slow down because of temperature. This drive sits right under my left hand in my laptop, and I have never experienced it making this spot of my laptop hot. In comparison, I had a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB mSATA drive in the same exact spot, and it frequently got so hot that it was uncomfortable to leave my hand there. That drive had many stability issues and as a result, I'm very happy to go back to this drive even though its capacity is 25% of the 850 EVO mSATA.
Small & light - If your computer has a mSATA port, it's a great way to add a super fast SSD without taking up much space, or adding much weight.
Cons: The price could be more competitive, but after buying a more competitively priced Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD and having major heat and compatibility issues, I am definitely going to stick with Plextor drives in the future. Their prices are worth the stability and peace of mind that their products offer.
Other Thoughts: I bought this in November 30th of 2013, so it's 2 years old now. Also, the packaging says it was manufactured in November 2013 as well, so I got a fresh one! Hopefully it's still like this on newegg, no more than 2-month old drives. There's no way for me to know that without buying another though.
I definitely recommend this drive. And I've never appreciated its stability or felt the need to review this drive until I had a bad experience with the Samsung mSATA. The first thing Samsung advertises about their 850 EVO drives is their stability, but their 850 EVO mSATA is anything but stable in comparison to this Plextor mSATA.
If you want more capacity, I recommend Plextor's 512GB mSATA. I would be very surprised if it isn't just about as stable as this one.
Pros: Massive capacity
Low power consumption
Does not generate excessive heat
Cons: Nothing yet
Other Thoughts: I've had two of these installed in my Alienware 17 for just over a year now. They have performed extremely well and I have not had a single issue with either one of them. They don't generate much heat, and I can barely ever hear them. I can only hear them when it is extremely quiet and my processor fan is not on. The only time I generally notice them is when they spool up after a period when they were not in use. I definitely recommend these drives!
I'm now planning to get a third of this model to replace my optical drive with. I will have 7TB of storage in my laptop (3 of these and a 1TB 850 EVO mSATA).
Pros: Awesome design
Works with my 8TB drive
Cons: Poor heat dissipation
The bracket holding the hard drive is plastic, not metal
Other Thoughts: I think this enclosure could have much, much better heat dissipation if it used a metal bracket to hold the hard drives instead of a plastic one. I've seen lots of hard drive enclosures before that my father had, and not one of them ever had a plastic bracket to hold the hard drive. It was always metal.READ FULL REVIEW
