Easy 3GHz settings

ASRock A780FullDisplayPort AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASRock A780FullDisplayPort AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Perfect PCI Express slot placement with a mATX board. Most motherboards only leave you one PCI slot if you use a 2 slot video card. The placement of the x1 PCI Express slot between the x16 and PCI slots solves this common problem. You do lose the x1 slot but who cares. I need 2 PCI slots, and have it here! Plenty of Bios adjustments. Running my BE2300 at 335x9 or 3.02GHz. This motherboard and the 45w AMD CPU, gives you 3GHz performance, quiet and air cooled, for around $100. Add in a pair of DDR2 PC6700 for $5 (AR) and a HD 4830 for $85 (AR), and you get a HTPC gaming rig for under $200. Most settings in Bios were left at default Auto, and it worked perfectly.

Cons: CPU socket is closer to front of motherboard, which limits optional HSF choices you might want in the future when using small mATX cases.

Overall Review: It took a few years but this is the board that finally beats Jetway 939 onboard video. ATi HD 3200 IGP (780g) asrock AM2 X2 2.61ghz (290x9) 3dm2k1se = 8500 3dmark03 = 1771 3dmark05 = 1435 3dmark06 = 797

Poor choice for Windows 7

Creative Fatal1ty Gaming USB Headset - Smaller Box
Creative Fatal1ty Gaming USB Headset - Smaller Box

Pros: With a large head, it fits great and is very comfortable for hours. If you wish, Windows 7 will detect and install very limited drivers that give you sound and mic support. Up and running in minutes. USB, so easy to add extension cable if needed. MIC is clear in games.

Cons: Read Creative website forums. They have had a Win 7 beta driver for 13 months now, and seem to instead prefer the default Windows driver. Either way, with both drivers you lose all the extra features such as CMSS and other Soundblaster settings. No software from their site corrects this. Ends up as a normal cheap generic headset, not the advanced headset I purchased. I've used Creative audio products for more than 15 years, and this is about as bad as they get.

Overall Review: Not sure what other reviewers received, but my results with item purchased here 2 weeks ago are opposite. This is also known as HS-1000. It is discontinued or archived at Creatives website. Same drivers can be used with HS-950 and HS-1200. Same terrible results in Windows 7. Read the Win 7 reviews with this headset elsewhere, and avoid until Creative fixes driver issues.

Still the best low cost mATX

HEC 6K28BBX585 Black 0.8mm SECC Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 585W Power Supply
HEC 6K28BBX585 Black 0.8mm SECC Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 585W Power Supply

Pros: It looks great. Shiny gloss black Piano finish with aluminum accents and gentle curves. You see the outside more than anything, so appearance is an important feature. Side panels fit perfectly. Side has CPU vent tube to bring in outside air closer to CPU.

Cons: No USB3.

Overall Review: It's appearance, fit and finish, outclasses most of the more expensive mATX cases out there. Everything is where it should be, making assembly a breeze. Have built dozens of systems using these cases, and occasionally drift off to try other popular brands, but always come right back to these for next purchase. After delivery of a new system, have had orders waiting for more due to what the end users see, "how great it looks". Anyone can make a PC fast and reliable, but how it looks on the outside is what sets them apart.

Better low end than this

Fractal Design Core 1000 Micro ATX Computer Case w/ 1 x 120mm fan
Fractal Design Core 1000 Micro ATX Computer Case w/ 1 x 120mm fan

Pros: Looks good on paper

Cons: Poor design and implementation. All screws are painted, meaning this tool-less setup requires a screwdriver. Fit and finish is clearly low end, with many low end cases better. USB ports are on wrong side, since being a mATX you might stuff this in a small area, pushed toward the right to allow left side vent clearance, which forces USB ports against cabinet. Side vents and USB should be same side. Rubber hard drive mounts somehow cause HD vibration. Had to wedge to correct.

Overall Review: Even with discounts, still not as good as normal cheap cases from other makers.

Great upgrade from HD 4830 in HTPC

POWERCOLOR PCS+ AX5770 1GBD5-PPG Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card
POWERCOLOR PCS+ AX5770 1GBD5-PPG Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card

Pros: Faster than the HD 4830 it is replacing. Quieter and uses less power too. Lowest priced HD 5770, higher clock speeds, better than most warranty, and comes with Dirt 2 (a 40 dollar DX11 game), all equals a no brainer purchase. Dirt 2 running in DX11 looks and runs great. Shows that these HD 5770's can be a great choice for DX11.

Cons: None.

Best HSF ever for HTPC!

Scythe SCSK-1100 100mm Shuriken Rev. B 3 Heat Pipes CPU Cooler
Scythe SCSK-1100 100mm Shuriken Rev. B 3 Heat Pipes CPU Cooler

Pros: Installs in seconds. With AM2, press included clips onto each side of HS. Done assembling. Apply AS to CPU. Place HSF over CPU using existing stock AM2 mount plate. Flip clip levers and locked. Done. You don't even need to remove motherboard! Zalman good learn a lot by checking out this mounting method. I am now another convert from Zalman to Scythe for CPU cooling. Silent and cool running. Fits great in tight mATX case.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Used as part of a gaming HTPC connected to a HOT 50" plasma in a HOT Florida home. Corner where PC resides has ambient temps around 85F. HSF keeps CPU at least 5C cooler than system. System idle 47C, CPU idle 42C. Much cooler and quieter than stock BE2300 HSF. Cranked up the CPU to 315x9.5, or 3GHz, and Prime95 for hours, with CPU temp never going higher than 55C. All in a tight mATX case. Other parts include HD 4830 with ZALMAN VNF100 fanless heatsink, 120mm case intake fan, and 120mm PS fan at low.
