Silicon Power Blaze B30 16GB 40/20 MB/s (read/write) USB 3.0 Swivel Flash Drive Black
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Solid build quality
Great read performance
Inexpensive
Capless design with activity LED
Stylish

Cons: Poor write performance for a USB 3.0 drive, barely on par with a decent USB 2.0 drive.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't familiar with this brand but I decided to take a chance based on some decent (though inconsistent) reviews from around the web.

The performance results that I did find from various review sites varied so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use this as a drive for transferring files or as a (mostly) read-only drive for loading OS and various utilities.

My results -

System:
ASUS P8Z77-V Pro/3770k
Intel USB3.0 ports
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
Windows 7 SP1 x64

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64
(Formatted FAT32, 1000 MB file size)

Read Write
Seq (MB/s) 117.0 20.37
512K (MB/s) 103.2 0.655
4K (MB/s) 9.314 0.172
4K QD32 (MB/s) 8.632 0.108

I ran tests using Windows Explorer to read and copy files ranging from 200MB to 2.5GB and had similar results:

Small files
Reads 116-120 MB/s
Writes 19-20 MB/s

Large files (1GB +)
Reads 110-114 MB/s
Writes 16-18 MB/s

The form factor is nice, much smaller and leaner than the Jumbo type drives like the Sandisk Extreme. I had no problems accessing adjacent usb ports on my various desktops and laptops with this drive inserted. The swivel cover has 4 distinct "locked" positions. When rotated to the rear it stays snug enough so that it doesn't flop around when trying to insert the drive into a port.

WIth the somewhat disappointing write performance of this drive I'll only be using it in the read-only capacity. For transferring data I'll stick to my other USB 3.0 drives like the Sandisk Extreme 32GB which has 2x the read performance and 5x the write performance.

Durability and longevity are unknowns for now, if I have any problems I post a follow up review.

Overall I give this USB drive a solid 4 eggs for it's form factor/design, build quality, solid read performance and price paid.

2 out of 5 eggs Different chip or defective? 07/03/2014

This review is from: ADATA DashDrive UV100 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (Black) Model AUV100-8G-RBK

Pros: Fast read speed
Small and thin form factor
No cap to lose

Cons: Abysmal write performance - see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: I purchased this 8GB model in Red back in January and I gave it a solid 4 egg rating for it's overall performance and value.

When this Black version went on sale for only $5 I felt confident that it would be a good purchase.

Upon opening the package for this 8GB Black model I noticed it was rattling. The black plastic spacer in the USB port was loose. No big deal as it's only a spacer and can be easily remedied.

I ran some benchmarks on my desktop, the same system and configuration that I benchmarked the previous 8GB Red unit on. The great read performance was the same but to my surprise the write performance was less than half of the previous 8GB Red unit.

System:
ASUS P8Z77-V Pro/3770k
Intel USB3.0 ports
Windows 7 SP1 x64

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64
(Formatted FAT32, 1000 MB file size)

ADATA UV100 8GB Black
Read Write
Seq (MB/s) 26.07 4.866
512K (MB/s) 25.59 0.467
4K (MB/s) 7.386 0.004
4K QD32 (MB/s) 8.093 0.004

ADATA UV100 8GB Red
Read Write
Seq (MB/s) 27.32 11.410
512K (MB/s) 26.98 0.791
4K (MB/s) 7.492 0.007
4K QD32 (MB/s) 7.687 0.008

Either ADATA has changed the memory components or I got a partially defective unit. Either way it's not worth my time, trouble or gas money to return this.

Pros: Same as listed in previous review

Cons: Newegg not allowing edits to previously posted reviews. I mean really, every other review site in existence allows you to edit or at least append your reviews.

Other Thoughts: Regarding my results from overclock on air - the Boost speed was 1210 MHz and not 1111 MHz:

This card overclocked pretty well, I managed a rock solid +100 on the GPU and +150 on the Memory using EVGA Precision X software (106 power, 90 temp). This resulted in a Boost speed of 1210 MHz while cool and ~1050 MHz while gaming (stock fan profile).
