Painless, well sorted, stable

MSI X99A SLI PLUS LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI X99A SLI PLUS LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I came to this X99 motherboard long after it was well sorted so that was a plus. I'm more accustomed to hitting products soon after release and going thru the typical firmware revision/upgrade process to get it all running as smoothly as it should. This has been rock solid and setup was as painless as it gets. Looks good considering it doesn't have an internal I/O cover as is becoming more common. Laid out well, no clearance problems and manufacturing quality seems very good. Like the overall black theme so nothing stands out like a sore thumb in my case window but function is always more important and it hasn't let me down there. Painless bumping my 5820K to 4.2 Ghz.

Cons: Black board, blue onboard LED but for some reason MSI uses green to light the onboard Power and Reset buttons? They should be blue preferably. Very little for me to criticize here and I'm trying hard to think of something after 2 months of time with it.

Overall Review: Recent BIOS update fixed the only minor issue that really bugged me every day. NumLock would always need to be pressed before entering my PIN on Win10. In the past this wouldn't have been an issue as my systems always ran 24/7 but since it is but a few seconds before we're into a booted environment these days they are always in sleep or powered off when not being actively used.

APC Back-UPS Connect BGE70 125 VA 75 Watts 3 Outlets UPS
APC Back-UPS Connect BGE70 125 VA 75 Watts 3 Outlets UPS

Pros: Keeps my cable modem and router online in power blips. Extended outages allow recharge of cell phone batteries.

Cons: Annoying, annoying, ANNOYING that the alarm sounds. This has no ability to be disabled that I can tell either. This unit is very, very basic. It should at least have a switch to be able to turn off ability of alarm to sound. I don't need to be hearing this in the middle of the night or at any time. This is not a unit that you would typically use to power something critical you'd need audible notification on. Needing that I'd think a more expensive option would be in order.

Overall Review: Some reviews refer to USB ports on this unit. Make no mistake, the BGE70 which this review is for has no USB ports. This has 3 2-prong 120v outlets only, nothing else. The BGE90M has USB ports but not this model.

Rock solid

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) C14 Memory Kit - Black Model CMK16GX4M4A2400C14

Pros: Combined with MSI X99A SLI Plus and i7 5820K and using the XMP-2666 profile it's been rock solid. Helps that this mb has had a very mature bios since the day I bought Dec '15. Runs at and beyond it's specs.

Cons: Nothing I've encountered.

Overall Review: First reviewer from 9/7/15 has a lot of misconceptions. Z170 chipsets were very fresh at time of his review and that is where his issues arose from and were very common at that time, not his seriously mistaken notions about channels and voltage.

It's a PSU and it works

RAIDMAX Scorpio Series RX-635AP-S 635 W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Semi-Modular Power Supply

Pros: It works and it's fairly quiet.

Cons: When tested right out of the box and when in the PC on the bench it exhibits a light clicking sound that is not coming from the fan. Fortunately this is not particularly audible in use. If purchased locally I'd have returned it for another or something different. AC cord is ridiculously short.

Typical Vantec, a mixed bag

Vantec EZ Swap 4 3.5" Aluminum Removable Trayless SATA Hard Drive Rack With LCD and Fan - Model MRK-401ST-BK
Vantec EZ Swap 4 3.5" Aluminum Removable Trayless SATA Hard Drive Rack With LCD and Fan - Model MRK-401ST-BK

Pros: Looks good, tray works smoothly. It's held up to many swaps in the 2 years I've owned.

Cons: Included fan on my unit is junk, very low quality. Was fine initially out of the box but in a very short time became very noisy. I actually removed it for a bit because it's not really needed in my case but the onboard controller isn't happy when one is not plugged in. I could spoof it but I haven't yet. Instead I keep rapping on the unit when the fan gets all noisy which shuts it up for awhile.

Overall Review: Every Vantec item I own or have purchased, and that's a lot of them, has an issue of some sort. Far better quality control is needed. Up the QC, charge a couple more bucks. I'd rather pay a small amount more for something that fulfills what I'm getting it for, and not for just the first week.

Slowwwwww

Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS 2TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD20EARS 2TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought 2, used in RAID1 setup. Lasted 3 years, if anyone considers that good.

Cons: Very slow drives. Shortest lifespan I've had out of any WD drive in the past decade with the exception of a couple that failed very quickly, which is preferable. One of the 2 I bought has failed in my mirror setup. No SMART warnings, no RAID warnings, the mirror just started failing. 2 year warranty? Apparently I overlooked that or gave the benefit of a doubt given my history with WD drives. First Greens I bought, will never buy any again as they clearly have only a 2 year warranty on these for a reason. A big disappointment in terms of speed as well as reliability.

Overall Review: One could argue I got life out of this but I'll argue that this life is poor, very poor. On top of that for whatever reason the drive gave no indications of failing via SMART warnings or any alerts on the RAID setup which is highly unusual. Luckily I lost very little since this is in a mirror but it did cause some breakage of the mirror even though the other drive is still okay at this point.
