Acer G7 Series G247HL bid Black 24

  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Thin bezel and thin profile are great space-saving features on my cramped desk. Big bright screen. No dead pixels that I can find. First few days felt luxurious coming from an older 19 inch LCD! Big screen for a relatively inexpensive monitor. HDMI, DVI, and VGA inputs. I feel like I made a great purchase for the money!

Cons: Controls are clunky and hard to use being on the bottom of the bevel. They are not labeled on the bezel face and they are small. You have to "feel" your way around. One button enables something to set and you almost have to look under the monitor (if your head fits) to not push the wrong button. And when you push the wrong one, you get kicked out! But you'll get the hang of it and, honestly, you'll only set it once (unless you're OCD) so I didn't dock an egg for this.

It's not a $300 gaming monitor (but not a con for me because I'm an information worker that doesn't have time for games anyway!) As far as contrast ratio, it's plenty black for the money!

Only comes with a VGA cable.

Other Thoughts: I had paid about $40 more from a retail store for an older version of an Acer (with the same specs more or less but without an HDMI port.) I had that monitor for a day before I ordered this one on sale. I was amazed by how compact this monitor was by comparison. The quality may be slightly better on this one (hard for me to see too much difference.)

Screen is too bright for someone who languished on a 2006-ish LCD for years. I immediately changed to "eco mode", which lowered my contrast, but now my eyes are thanking me! it seems much brighter than my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012) still! Which is also my work computer and making use of my Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (looks fantastic to me at 1920 x 1080!)

I had a coupon code that brought this down to $130 + free shipping. Arrived after two days even though I'm two states away from New Egg (kudos to OnTrac even though they did deliver it at 7:30 at night -- January -- and didn't bother knocking on the door!)

4 out of 5 eggs Works better using USB switch 04/09/2014

This review is from: Rosewill RKV-2DVI KVM Switch

Pros: Works perfectly with my Comfort Mouse after plugging keyboard and mouse into USB hub and toggling mouse emulation mode a few times. Very inexpensive solution compared with similar specifications from other brands.

Cons: Setup can get tricky with new hardware.

Other Thoughts: The trick is to not plug in the keyboard at the KVM. Just plugin a good USB hub. Plug your keyboard and mouse into that. Also, do not plug keyboard USB into computer. Only plug in the black USB. This disables hotkeys but I'd rather have it work and never used hotkeys anyway.

2 out of 5 eggs Not working with Comfort Mouse 3000 04/08/2014

This review is from: Rosewill RKV-2DVI KVM Switch

Pros: Worked nearly flawlessly for several years.

Cons: Does not work with USB mouse I bought (see other review.) Recently I purchased a Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000. Mouse works fine plugged in directly to Windows 7 PC and OSX Mavericks Macbook Pro. mouse is unresponsive when plugged into KVM. Even after ScrLk + ScrLk + F5 or ScrLk + ScrLk + m.

Other Thoughts: Have had issues with my macbookpro and Windows 7 PC lately with the screen going black. I have to turn the monitor off and on. Does not happen if plugged directly into mouse or PC. Have done much testing and am still not certain this issue is the KVM. However, it seems like if I keep both machines from sleeping that screen issue goes away. Probably KVM. No idea on permanent fix. Was, and still is a good deal. But you roll the dice with this one.
