Nice case

Athena Power CA-SWH01BH8 Black 1.2mm Metal, ABS Plastic (front bezel) Pedestal Server Case
Athena Power CA-SWH01BH8 Black 1.2mm Metal, ABS Plastic (front bezel) Pedestal Server Case

Pros: The hot-swap SATA drive backplane cages are definately worth the money. Each drive tray slot has a power button that doubles as an activity/power LED. Molex and SATA power connectors on the back for flexible hook-up. Sturdy case design that works well with the Athena Power redundant P/S purchased separately.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: The Athena Power redundant P/S models require removal of the standard power supply mounting bracket from the case. I had to install a secondary side bracket on the PSU after removing the power modules. Too bad Athena Power doesn't include instructions with their power supplies. I had to figure everything out myself even though it's their case and their PSU.

OK for basic drive mounting

StarTech.com 2.5 Inch SATA Hard Drive to 3.5 Inch Drive Bay Mounting Kit (BRACKET25SAT)
StarTech.com 2.5 Inch SATA Hard Drive to 3.5 Inch Drive Bay Mounting Kit (BRACKET25SAT)

Pros: Includes a molex to SATA power+data cable. Hefty stamped steel with bottom clearance.

Cons: There is no molex to SATA power cable by itself. The bottom hole spacing for 3.5" doesn't match standard 3.5" drives. This kit does not help mount 2.5" drives in the Athenapower drive backplane tray assemblies. The connector spacing is offset. You will need to buy a 2.5" backplane assembly instead.

Overall Review: For the price I would have at least expected standard screw spacing for bottom-mounting.

Card Reader DOA, USB/Floppy OK

SYBA SY-CRD50034 All-in-one USB 2.0 / Floppy 3.5" Multifunction Floppy Disk and Memory Card Reader
SYBA SY-CRD50034 All-in-one USB 2.0 / Floppy 3.5" Multifunction Floppy Disk and Memory Card Reader

Pros: It fits 3.5" bay, has a floppy drive for those annoying update processes/applications that still refuse to join the 2000's and make you use a floppy drive. It also has memory readers and it's inexpensive.

Cons: The media reader was DOA but the USB pass-through and floppy drive worked fine. Tossed the box before testing it so I can't return it for a replacement. I will buy a USB floppy drive and forget these combo drives because I've had other quality problems before with these floppy combos.

Overall Review: Get what you pay for I guess.

ASUS M2N-SLI BIOS option ROM incompatible! Debian not supported!

LSI MegaRAID SATA / SAS 9260-4i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB Onboard Memory RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies
LSI MegaRAID SATA / SAS 9260-4i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB Onboard Memory RAID Controller Card, Kit--Avago Technologies

Pros: Good price for 6Gbs card. Decent tech support apart from conflicting O/S support notes.

Cons: Unstated BIOS option ROM compat issues prevent this thing from working properly! Where was the "known hardware interoperabiliy" list when I researched this? Can not set up drives using WebBIOS. Who really has time to learn and use the CLI from the non-scrollable on-line help?? Also, the MegaRAID Storage Manager RPM only partially installs on Debian. The scripts for the SNMP packages are broken or do not translate to deb scripts correctly via alien. Had to hack the package states to purge it all. Stay away if you are on Debian/Ubuntu or if you have an ASUS SLI motherboard!

OK Scanner/Horrible Software & Support

Kodak ScanMate i1120 600 dpi Sheet Fed Scanner
Kodak ScanMate i1120 600 dpi Sheet Fed Scanner

Pros: Good scan rate, decent scans.

Cons: The whole point of SmartTouch is to use the button and option selector on the scanner to perform different tasks from the scanner itself. Windows XP just pops up a scanner event dialog asking the "what do you want to do?" question with no reference to SmartTouch.

Overall Review: OK scanner if you don't mind having to pick your options from the task bar app. I've found no solution and I don't expect to. I've seen several unsolved references to the same problem and comments about Kodak's horrible tech support. Buy a Fujitsu or Canon.

great features for the price.. highly recommended

Athena Power CA-SWH02BH7 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case 4 External 5.25" Drive Bays
Athena Power CA-SWH02BH7 Black Steel Pedestal Server Case 4 External 5.25" Drive Bays

Pros: 2 4-drive "backplane" cages, with fans and independant drive power control, for SATA included. Plenty of active cooling for the drives and there's plenty of cooling for the other internals. Nice 2.5"x4 backplanes available for SSD/HDD RAID that only takes up 1 5.25" slot. 2 SATA and 2 4-pin Molex power connectors for the 3.5" drive backplanes so you have decent power options. Overall case construction is well worth the price.

Cons: If you opt for the Athena redundant power module you will have to remove the top-center screw in the cover(back-side) in order let the module slide back enough to mount it securely. One of the hot-swap "backplanes" started giving me RAID controller drive timeout errors on disk #4 after a few weeks of testing. I swapped it with the other one (I'm only using one backplane) and the problem went away. Make sure you get locking cables for the hot-swaps. If there's any play in the connection it can fall out. Don't try to use 2.5"->3.5" drive adapters on the 3.5" trays. The drive connectors won't line up correctly. Spend the $(not much for the hot-swap option IMO) on the 2.5"x4 backplane module. It works great with 2.5" SSD drives and only takes up 1 5.25" slot. The 2.5" trays feel cheaper than the 3.5" though. I suppose space limits sturdiness when at this price point.
