This review is from: Shuttle DS61 V1.1 Intel H61 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System
Pros: I've put together 4 of these little beasties. They're nice and small, very quiet, and versatile.
The layout is tight but well thought out and easy to work with.
Big pro is that the NICs are supported under VMware ESXi 5.0/5.1!! These boxes are very nice white-box ESXi servers. If you wish to upgrade to 5.5, search for "Andreas Peetz ESXi 5.5 missing Realtek drivers". He details how to add the drivers back into the installation ISO.
Some people mentioned high cost, but when you take into account Its very small size coupled with the fact that you're getting the motherboard, a case, a vesa mount, and the power supply it really isn't.
Other Thoughts: #1) i5-3470S, 16GB RAM, 250GB Samsung EVO mSATA, tiny USB flash drive - ESXi, VMs on NAS
#2) same as #1
#3) i3-3225, 8GB RAM, 120GB Crucial M500 - HTPC in living room, content on NAS
#4) i3-3225, 8GB RAM, 120GB Crucial M500 - Astaro/Sophos firewall
This review is from: ZyXEL GS1100-8HP Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit PoE+ Switch
Pros: Seems to be a good unmanaged PoE 8-port switch. It is currently powering a smoke-detector-style AP quite nicely.
Cons: No VLAN support.
NewEgg indicated VLAN support. This switch does -not- provide VLAN support. Shame on me for not researching further. NewEgg is usually better about that.
Other Thoughts: I ordered EnGenius EGS2108P as a replacement as it -does- support VLANs (a fact I made sure of :) ).READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: Nice laptop. I specifically wanted W7Pro... not ready for the Metro interface. It runs well and is far speedier than the older Lenovo u450p (SU7300-based) laptop I was using. Excellent battery life.
Cons: None really. A bit much pre-installed trial-ware for my taste...
Other Thoughts: I put an ADATA XPG SX300 256GB mSATA SSD in it and reinstalled Windows. Makes an incredible difference in performance. Using the 5400RPM drive as mass storage.READ FULL REVIEW
