Shuttle XS35GT-804 Intel Atom D510 (1.66GHz, dual-core) Intel NM10 Next-generation NVIDIA ION graphics 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: I swapped out the hard drive for an small intel SSD for complete silence and to allow to run cooler. I don't play games or watch movies or any video intense applications. I needed a small light duty computer than was dead silent, cool, energy efficient. We used this in a medical office for electronic records. It had enough power to run the program and antivirus program at a very acceptable pace. Finally no noise and heat issues with a computer tucked in a cabinet. We even were able to turn off the cabinet fan! I don't miss that rumble from the cabinet.

Cons: Would have been better with 4 GB memory and I would have liked faster than 800 speed.

Other Thoughts: The SSD really helped this unit act like a "normal" desktop in terms of perceived speed. The processor is no speed demon but honestly the processor is not the bottleneck in most computers. For most usage I am extremely pleased. I'm picking up a couple more for the kids at home for internet use. Build in wireless is a plus (haven't tried yet)

areca ARC-1231ML-2G PCI Express SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card

1 out of 5 eggs Windows 7 can't discover 03/25/2010

This review is from: areca ARC-1231ML-2G PCI Express SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: I have experience of having the 1220 Areca products on several Windows 2003 Servers without incident. I have found them to be fast and efficient but the first one was a challenge to set up. The installation method I used for servers did work but.....

Cons: Windows 7 64 does not find card when installed to exisitng system. The install disk included does not assist as it only contains drivers which if you can't discover the card are useless. 3-4 conversations with Areca did not come up with anything but blame of motherboard, OS, chipset, and installer but not their lack of installation process. It does install fine on blank disk with new build of OS but I just don't have the energy or time to start from scratch on present computer which simply needs pure productivity. This card is in the pile for next build if not outdated by SATA 6 GB boards. Sorry this is one star for lack of install software and support.

Other Thoughts: ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s with Windows 7 64 bit. 3 Intel SSD on motherboard RAID with single SATA for backup. Addition of Areca was in hope of adding 5 intell SSD (4 in RIAD 5 with hot spare) and 4 mechanical Western Digital disks for backup in RAID 5. This computer can't be taken off line for more then a few minutes at time.

SUPERMICRO CSE-M14TB 2.5

4 out of 5 eggs Works 03/15/2010

This review is from: SUPERMICRO CSE-M14TB 2.5" mobile rack

Pros: Great space saver. Saved me from using 8 slots with adapters to seat 8 2.5 inch SSDs. Simplified power cabling mess too. I got 8 drives in 2 slots. Not bad!

Cons: I took off the small fan at back for my 4 SSD to reduce noise (they don't make much heat and my case is a wind tunnel to start with. Cable provided has 8484 connector which made it difficult to connect to my Areca RAID controller and needed special cabling. I would be fine to connect to motherboard for most as the other end was SATA.

Other Thoughts: I have had a couple of times were a drive has fallen off line and it needed to be reseated. My RAID then simply fixed itself but if this was critical data on single drive I would have been more than upset.
