Pros: It is short, so can be used to occupy an empty drive bay in the event that the faceplate turns up missing.
Cons: Claims to burn DVDs. Unable to produce even a single working DVD.
Too light to work as a doorstop.
Too bulky for a paperweight.
Other Thoughts: Was unable to test the drive within NewEgg's 30 days, so attempted to resolve the issue with Asus but even after they acknowledged that the drive was faulty, they refused to make good.
I have personally boycotted the company and have influenced others, steering purchases away from ASUS. The end result: I lost about $20 and some time and effort. ASUS saved the cost of repairing or replacing the drive but lost ~$4000 (and counting!) in other sales that I can account for, possibly more that I am not yet aware of.
If I can't trust them to fix a cheap, known faulty DVD burner that doesn't burn DVDs, how can I trust any of their more expensive, more complicated products?
Pros: Acceptable price. Not bulky like my previous 2x1GB sticks.. Seems to work well enough.
Cons: Package was a bit of a PITA to get into.
Other Thoughts: This package had a voucher code for a free movie download, but nothing interested me. Took almost an hour to get the board to even attempt to POST with both these and my older 2x1GB sticks, but that is likely the fault of my board. After manually setting the CAS latency, everything seems to be running fine. 6GB on a 32bit PAE kernel.READ FULL REVIEW
Cons: The constant nagging fear that the drive will fail soon.
Other Thoughts: Added this to an order as an impulse buy due to the low price. SMART has no complaints about the drive and a series of scans for bad blocks came up with nothing, so fingers are crossed! This drive will be used either to increase storage for non-important MythTV recordings, as a temporary scratch space, or for sneakernetting large files, so if it does die soon, no big loss.READ FULL REVIEW
