Excellent Budget Card

MSI GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC
MSI GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC

Pros: Generally excellent game performance considering the price.

Cons: Fan is loud and does a poor job of cooling.

Overall Review: This card is great for budget gamers. My system is: Pentium D 915; 2GB PNY Optima DDR2 667; Windows XP; Realtek HD Audio; around 3 TB of storage spread over a couple 500GB SATA drives. My motherboard is some ECS one that allowed me to upgrade one piece at a time. Here are my benchmarks (Anything 25 and up is very smooth to most people's eyes, 20 seems slightly slow, 15 and below is choppy and unplayable): Crysis had a very playable 25FPS with all settings on high, no AA, and at 1024x768. All Source Games (Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Portal etc.) ran at 50FPS with all settings maxxed out and at 1680x1050. Bioshock ran at around 25-45 FPS with all settings maxxed out at 1680x1050. Call of Duty 4 ran at 25-40 FPS with all settings maxxed out at 1680x1050. Oblivion ran at around 20-35 FPS with all settings maxxed out at 1680x1050. The fan keeps the card at a wonderfully toasty 51 degrees centigrade while making quite a bit of noise. You'll need a aftermarket co

Great While It Lasted

XCLIO STABLEPOWER 460W 460W ATX V2.2 Active PFC Power Supply
XCLIO STABLEPOWER 460W 460W ATX V2.2 Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Worked great while it lasted.

Cons: After about 1 and 1/2 years it failed, caught fire and took my PC with it. :-(

Great Value

PNY Optima 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model MN8192KD3-1066
PNY Optima 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model MN8192KD3-1066

Pros: Cheap for 8GB of laptop RAM. Fast, free Newegg shipping. Upgrading from 4GB to 8GB gives incredible speed boosts in OS X and all programs running under it.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Hopefully the rebate won't take forever.

Excellent Drive, So Far.

WD My Book 2TB Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Storage WDBACW0020HBK-NESN
WD My Book 2TB Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Storage WDBACW0020HBK-NESN

Pros: I recently purchased this drive so that when Apple adds USB 3.0 capability, I will be ready. First, the physical aspects: The rive runs incredibly cool - slightly above room temperature. Second, it is silent. Much quieter than my previous generation of Western Digital hard drives, which I have never had a problem with. Finally, it is aesthetically pleasing, and matches either a PC or an Apple computer well. The glossy, piano-black finish is beautiful, and the activity light minimalist yet proportional. Now, onto performance. The drive uses a single USB 3.0 port that is downward compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 (cable included). I'm currently using USB 2.0, and it is outperforming my previous USB 2.0 external hard drive. It comes formatted as NTFS, and within seconds I reformatted to HFS+ for my Macbook Pro. The WD software bundle is not invasive, and does not install automatically. By formatting the drive you erase it. This is helpful considering that it adds little functionality.

Cons: I can't think of a single problem. The price was appropriate and the build quality excellent. There are no studies showing which hard drive company is more reliable, but my experience may be admitted as anecdotal evidence - I have had excellent luck with WD hard drives, only one out of five in the past 10 years have failed. Do not fret, if this hard drive does happen to fail, I will update this review soon thereafter.

Overall Review: Another success so far, Western Digital! Bravo, Cheerio, Jolly Good, etc.

SONY 4.7GB 16X DVD-R 50 Packs Spindle Disc Model 50DMR47RS4

Pros: They always work. I've never had a Sony DVD-R that has not written successfully, and I've never had one die on me during the three years I have used Sony media.

Cons: Slightly higher price, but I will pay for a good product.

Overall Review: Love em!

Good PSU, Hot PSU!

Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply

Pros: Practically Silent, Powerful, Reduces Power Consumption! Reliable too.

Cons: Runs pretty hot.

Overall Review: This thing runs pretty hot, I hope it can hold up in the heat it generates. I can't increase the fan speed on it so I'll just have to see how it holds up.
