A good buy

Lenovo ThinkCentre M58E [Microsoft Authorized Recertified] Mid Tower Desktop PC with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVDROM, Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit
Lenovo ThinkCentre M58E [Microsoft Authorized Recertified] Mid Tower Desktop PC with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, DVDROM, Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit

Pros: Good, fast machine with windows 7 installed. But, be prepared to do a lot of work before it is ready to use. After you are done with all the updates and changes in the bios set up utility, you will have a great, inexpensive computer. There is no bloatware. That is a plus!

Cons: A lot of work getting it ready for use. But, it is worth it.

Overall Review: Original version of windows 7 is installed. Right off the bat there are 172 updates that windows will want to download. I suggest that you download the "system update readiness tool" from Microsoft first thing. Then download and install about 25 updates at a time. When I tried to let it do its own thing, it hung up. Also, go into the bios set-up utility and make the hard drive first in the boot list. The computer is set up for the cd rom as the first boot, but it takes 5 minutes for the computer to decide that there is no disk in the cd drive. Making the hard drive first in the boot order will save 5 minutes on your boot time, and that should be your first order of business because there are a lot of re-boots during the update process. After all the updates are installed and boot order is taken care of, you have a first rate, inexpensive computer. Have fun.

Smooth installation if you do NOT follow the HP Smart Install Instructions. Do Not plug in the USB cable until the install program asks for it.

HP LaserJet Pro P1102w (CE658A#BGJ)19 ppm 600 x 600 dpi 160-Sheet 8 MB E-Print / USB / WIFI Mono Laser Printer Factory Recertified

Pros: Works as advertised, once you are successful in getting it installed.

Cons: Faulty installation instructions. The instructions state 1. Connect power cord. 2. Connect USB cable, and the HP Smart Install program will guide you. Well, if you connect the USB cable to the smart install program will get hung up and you cannot recover. I attempted this on a system running Microsoft Windows 7 and the program hung up at the "configure to print over Wireless Network" option. I tried it on another system running Windows XP with the same result. After logging on the HP.com and reviewing the forum, I discovered that you are not supposed to connect the USB cable, but wait until after the HP Smart Install program asks for it to be connected. Fortunately, I had a third system available, which was running XP and was able to successfully install the printer by waiting to connect the USB connection until after the Smart Install program asked for the connection to be made. So, if you follow the installation instructions that are shipped with the printer, you are in trouble.

Overall Review: Having a wireless printer is great. All systems on the work group network can access it.

Download drivers in advance

Dell Optiplex 380 Tower Computer Core 2 Duo 2.8 Ghz, 2GB, 80GB, DVD, No Operating System, No Software - 1 Year Warranty

Pros: Good, fast computer. I wanted to use this with XP Professional and did a standard installation. After the system is installed (complete with necessary drivers) you will be pleased with the speed. However, see below. There is work to do. I have not been able to get USB2 to work even with latest drivers, however USB1 works. That's ok for my intended system use.

Cons: After loading XP professional, I had no internet access. So I had to use another computer to download the updated drivers on to a disk, then transfer them to this system. USB drives are not recognized in USB2. You have to access the device manager and disable the USB2 enhanced host controller, then USB drives are recognized in USB1.

Overall Review: If you want to use USB 2, install an adapter card. There are no PS2 keyboard plugs in the motherboard, so you have to use an adapter if you want to use an old IBM "M" keyboard. Odd thing, the USB keyboard, and USB mouse will work when the USB2 enhanced host controller is enabled, however no other USB devices will work.

Great update for old computer

Kingston 1 GB 400MHz PC3200 DDR 184- PIN DIMM Desktop Memory (KVR400X64C3A/1G)

Pros: A great memory update for an old Asus motherboard. I replaced the old memory with the new 1 GB memory sticks. I now have 2 GB memory in the computer. It runs much better now.

Cons: none

It's QUIET

StarTech.com ATX2POW400HS 400 W ATX12V 2.01 Power Supply
StarTech.com ATX2POW400HS 400 W ATX12V 2.01 Power Supply

Pros: Nice power supply. This company seems to under state their supply power ratings, so you get a supply that is not likely to fail under the rated load. The fan is very quiet. When the display is in snooze mode, I have to glance at the power light on the computer to see if it is running.

Cons: None. Fit right in and started working.

Overall Review: They enclose a note stating that the detached 4-pin connector (on the 24-pin power plug) cannot be used in place of the ATX +12V 4-pin (P4) connector. A nice touch.. did you ever make that mistake? Come on now -- admit it!

Nice usb enclosure for HD

SAMSUNG 943N High Gloss Black 19" 5ms LCD Monitor with Tilt Adjustment 300 cd/m2 DC 8000:1
SAMSUNG 943N High Gloss Black 19" 5ms LCD Monitor with Tilt Adjustment 300 cd/m2 DC 8000:1

Pros: Hey, it works well. A three year old PATA 120GB HD was installed and was left running with a scan all night. The next morning the unit was just slightly warm. It is being used with XP systems. Simply plug it in and XP picks it up immediately. Mounting the HD is a little bit snug.. plug the power first, and then slide the drive into the main connector. The drive has to be configured as "master." Others have complained about the large wall wart. No wall wart with this one. The power supply shipped with this enclosure has a 18 inch cord connecting to the power source & a four foot cord connecting to the enclosure.

Cons: None

Overall Review: The blue light doesn't bother me. Looks kind of nice. I don't currently have the need to use this for a SATA drive, but it is nice to have that capability in case I need it.
