COUGAR CF-V12H Vortex Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing (Fluid) 300,000 Hours 12CM Silent Cooling Fan

3 out of 5 eggs Makes a lot of noise in horizontal position 07/20/2014

This review is from: COUGAR CF-V12H Vortex Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing (Fluid) 300,000 Hours 12CM Silent Cooling Fan

Pros: Quiet when kept vertical
Good cfm and air flow
Great build quality

Cons: Makes clicking noises in horizontal position when in full speed mode

Other Thoughts: I have 3 mounted to a horizontal rad. Of the 3 fans, 2 will make noise at full speed. One fan needs to be around 75% of full speed and the other one needs to be reduced to 50% speed to cease noise completely.

I'm disappointed that this problem hasn't been fixed. I considered returning these but really it's beyond the hassle to do so. It's too bad as these fans look very well built.

2 out of 5 eggs Update to previous review on 11/10/2013 8:34:33 AM 01/01/2014

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC56U AC1300 Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless Router

Pros: 5 Ghz bands work decently
Looks nice
Asuswrt is actually quite nice

Cons: 2.4 Ghz is unusable STILL
Range on both bands is low (while the 2.4 network is unusable, you still have a constant signal and I measured -50db versus the -29db of my old Buffalo G54; remarkable considering the age of my G54)
Runs warm with the passive cooling (I get 58-60 celsius)

Other Thoughts: 2.4 GHZ still doesn't work, even with newest beta firmware (.501)
In fact, that firmware did absolutely nothing to help the 2.4 GHZ issue.

Celeste has been kind enough to give me a couple of suggestions, both of which do not do a thing:
Go to your router settings and under WAN>WAN Internet Connection > DHCP query frequency > change Aggressive Mode to Normal Mode and hit Apply.
Advanced Settings > Wireless > Channel Bandwidth, set this to 20 Mhz and hit Apply.

Celeste, if you're reading this, I just want you to know that I've tried darn near every permutation of settings with no luck. This issue needs to be escalated. I'm looking at the reviews and the number of people with completely unusable 2.4 radio is quite alarming.

2 out of 5 eggs Hugely disappointed 11/10/2013

This review is from: ASUS RT-AC56U AC1300 Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless Router

Pros: 5 Ghz bands work decently
Looks nice
Asuswrt is actually quite nice

Cons: 2.4 Ghz is unusable
Range on both bands is low (while the 2.4 network is unusable, you still have a constant signal and I measured -50db versus the -29db of my old Buffalo G54; remarkable considering the age of my G54)
Runs warm with the passive cooling (I get 58-60 celsius)

Other Thoughts: As others have stated, the 2.4 Ghz is broken. Using various networking tools will show that the connection speed will cycle between 1mbps to a normal speed . You will only have a stable connection if you have direct line of sight and are within 15 feet of range. I've tried all official firmwares, Merlin versions, and the experimental dd-wrt version with no luck. Others on smallnetbuilders forum report similar results with this model and the newer ac68u. I hope this is a firmware issue but it seems not everyone has this problem. I suspect their power saving algorithm is flawed as the connection is maintained but the speed drops to the lowest possible value.

Bottom line: Wait until people stop reporting the 2.4 Ghz issue. This is happening to too many people to be a special case.
