SeaSonic SS-300ET 300 W ATX12V Ver.2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
SeaSonic SS-300ET 300 W ATX12V Ver.2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: It's very quiet in a PC with a 45 watt CPU and integrated graphics.

Cons: .

Overall Review: The replacement unit is fine. So was the original, very likely. It turns out that there was some flakiness with the case power switch in one of the three new cases for these systems. In too much of a rush I thought it was a problem with the PSU. Bleh. Fortunately this kind of idiocy doesn't happen every day.

SeaSonic SS-300ET 300 W ATX12V Ver.2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
SeaSonic SS-300ET 300 W ATX12V Ver.2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Unknown - would not power on.

Cons: No output at all. Zero volts everywhere.

Overall Review: OEM unit wrapped in bubble wrap. It and the box it was shipped in looked undamaged. RMA'd back to Newegg.

Quiet but not near-silent

SPARKLE R-SPI300GLN 300 W ATX12V 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
SPARKLE R-SPI300GLN 300 W ATX12V 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Fan is quiet in a PC with a 45 watt CPU and integrated graphics.

Cons: Has only one SATA connector, so requires buying extra SATA adapters to put on some of the numerous Molex connectors. Makes a continuous buzzing sound that isn't loud enough to notice in a busy environment, but is audible in a quiet room - just bothersome enough to keep me from running Folding at Home on it overnight.

fast and cool

AMD Sempron 140 - Sempron Sargas Single-Core 2.7 GHz Socket AM3 45W Processor - SDX140HBGQBOX
AMD Sempron 140 - Sempron Sargas Single-Core 2.7 GHz Socket AM3 45W Processor - SDX140HBGQBOX

Pros: Recognized as Athlon II X2 4400e on Gigabyte 785G board. Running at 3.65GHz with stock voltages, stock heatsink and fan. No changes other than raising base frequency from 200 MHz to 270 MHz.

Cons: none

Overall Review: Replaced the thick thermal interface pad with a thin layer of Artic Silver. With that, the small heatsink and fan seem perfectly adequate. Running Folding at Home on one core, this system doesn't use enough power to start the fan turning on the 300 watt Seasonic power supply, which stays cold to the touch.

Electronics failed in normal use

Logitech Gray Wired TrackMan Wheel Mouse
Logitech Gray Wired TrackMan Wheel Mouse

Pros: It is kinder to the nerves of the wrist and arm. It didn't last as long as I expected, but while it worked it was much better than a standard mouse.

Cons: After 10 months it began sending hundreds of mouse clicks per second.

Overall Review: Two years ago I bought a regular Logitech mouse that lasted a year before it started sending double left clicks. That's two out of three Logitech mice/trackballs in the past three years that have lasted a year or less in normal use.
