MSI R9 290X LIGHTNING 4GB 512-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Runs cool. Runs all modern games on Ultra settings @ 1080p. MSI Afterburner allows you to tweak and overclock your card like no other, well, there's R1vaTun3r which Afterburner and Precision X is based on and big props to Alexey Nicolaychuk for this powerful tool.

Cons: Not sure why they made the center yellow fan smaller, since smaller fans are noisier.

Other Thoughts: Always reapply thermal paste on new video cards, since they tend to do a sloppy job at the factory, and when properly reapplied, drops the temps by a few degrees Celsius. I personally use Prolimatech's PK-3, works great even on uneven surfaces.

Haven't begun overclocking the card as I have no need for the extra performance boost atm.

HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS600012872SN (0S03839) 6TB 7200 RPM Up To 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Huge 7200rpm storage.

Cons: As another reviewer has mentioned, the drive would seek for no reason. Noise is getting annoying because I sit next to it almost 8hrs a day. Runs hotter than my 4TB HGST drives by 8~10C.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this over a month ago but recently had time to install it. Going to wait and see if the random seek noise gets worse.

MSI A78M-E45 FM2+ / FM2 AMD A78 (Bolton D3) 6 x SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Solid board. UEFI interface is easy to navigate. Updated BIOS without any issues. Provides PS/2 ports, great for people with older peripherals migrating from Windows XP.

Cons: RAM incompatibility. Over 2 dozen builds using AMD A6-5400K and G.Skill 8GB 1866MHz (F3-1866C9D-8GAB) memory and this board has caused me problems twice, both memory related. MSI's other versions, A78M-E35 and A88XM-E35 work fine.

However I noticed the issue could be memory side because I've noticed G.Skill using different color PCB on the exact same memory (F3-1866C9D-8GAB), the green PCB version would give me issues, whereas the black PCB version has been good so far. I'm guessing the green PCB version is old stock?

Other Thoughts: G.Skill should use a different model number if they're going to use different chips/PCB.
