HP ENVY 15-J063CL Notebook Intel Core i7 4700MQ (2.40GHz) 12GB Memory 1TB HDD Intel HD Graphics 4600 15.6
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: Processor is quick.
Backlit Keyboard.
1080p Touchscreen.
USB 3 all ports and extra charging power on one (very handy to charge toys when computer is powered down)
RAID controller (MSATA and SATA can work together in RAID 0,1,or JBOD. and also have a backup service.
AC wireless adapter (drivers suck but will improve with time)
HP offers a longer warranty than Newegg (hp support assistant software)
HD Graphics 4600 (not nearly as good as 51/5100 Iris but not bad)
Beats dramatically improves the sound. (make sure you play with the application to make it what it can be)
TouchPad is very nice when you get it all dialed in.
Very nice with Virtural Machines.
No trouble with external Displays.
Gigabit ethernet.
Stereo microphone.
Support for 16GB RAM (unless you can find 16gb SODIMM DDR3 modules)

Cons: From J to A on keyboard is slightly raised. (not a big deal)
Cooling sucks. to use full capacity you will need a cooling pad or it will throttle the processor at the TJunction of ... 100C. (100C!!!)
Graphics gets hotter than processor playing games (according to intel XTU)
Ram is not that great of speeds and to get the most from internal graphics i'd like to see 8-9 instead of 11. (im picky but its integrated graphics and makes a difference.) processor can handle 1866 RAM but this computer cannot change the timings or speed (bios or XTU)
Overall issues with drivers (could be me but I cant seem to identify why)
It just seems like most things are just more complicated. could be operating system. could be hardware. this is my first computer with win8.1
Power Adapter is not as awesome as I would like. It seems to be the sort of "weak link" in this rig.
Screen is quite a bit "glairy" (its has a crazy glare) not the best for outside.
Battery life needs to be tweaked but can be capable of 3+ hrs. but you gotta tune it down and do your googles to get it. (brightness, backlight keyboard off, processor tune down, PCI link state mgmt, HDD spin down time....)

Other Thoughts: WEI rating (winaero WEI tool) is
P 8.1
R 8.1
G 5.9
HDD 8.1 (Crucial M500 240GB MSATA)

Intel kinda skrewd us since Ivy Bridge. The therm. paste on the processor cap/processor heat spreader is pew-pew and people are seeing dramatic reduction in temperature by changing the paste on the actual processor beneath the lid/heat spreader/cap. Its pretty messed up.
This has a lot of "mesh" built in the bottom of it that serves no purpose but to trap heat inside the laptop. ( I may or may not have removed it)
easy access to components that users are "allowed" to change.
^I recommend this upgrade highly^

For battery life!! C:\powercfg /energy

Pros: Well its def. fast.
Magician software has RAPID Mode that optimizes ram usage to create crazy fast page file/buffer. And it uses it flawlessly even copying to slower HDDs and usb drives
Magician also optimizes windows which saved some time.
It stays pretty cool under load, but also has a built in feature to throttle the ssd when its too hot.(Ive never seen it get close)
compared it against my OCZ Vertex 4 and its definately ahead in real world benchmarks

Cons: It is too fast for my computer

Athlon x4 Propus 620 (2.6ghz OC 3.5ghz) :)
6GB hyjunks 1333 9-9-9-11 OC 1800 :)
840EVO (120GB) RAPID
ASUS Radeon 7750
500GB Seagate drive
When it reaches for maximum IOPS it overlaods the memory controller. at least i think thats whats going on. RAPID is pretty transparent. SO idk where the bottleneck is when i can only achieve these numbers on benchmarks that are using ram to get figures.for example

so you can see that the ram is fast and magician uses it well but once it runs out of ram the performance drops with it.
6GB ram is not much but magician uses it well in everyday computing to increase speed dramatically.

i recommend this product. but have only tested it for a short time

SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A75

5 out of 5 eggs Works as expected 08/05/2013

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A75

Pros: This thing is FAST. If you haven't moved to a(n) SSD then your spinny hard disk will be the bottleneck when moving large files.
I chose this particular drive because it has "lifetime warranty" and the highest IOPS I could find in a flash drive without spending ridiculous money for an "ssd flash drive" which is essentially what this is anyway. Im running Ubuntu on it right now on my laptop so the people who said it didn't boot, sorry for your luck. Also boots from the USB3 port on both of my computers. (and it boots FAST, faster than my spinny disk's operating system (win7)) its seriously like an early generation ssd.

Cons: It does get hot. but its lifetime warranty
Don't trust any electronics that regularly get hot with valueable data. as far as I'm concerned if its not saved in 2 locations (raid1) its not saved at all. If/when it fails i warned you.
I don't hate the design although it could be smaller I guess
but no cap to lose.
shipping was painless, packaging is a pain in the as$, but who really cares about that.
I'm really digging for things not to like...

2227 4K iops.
cant beat that with a stick
well, i guess ill see how this goes and if and how long something so good can possible last.
