Most Favorable Review

Very slick, cute little drive, nicely done

Rosewill RX81U-ES-25B 2.5" IDE to USB 2.0 External Enclosure
Rosewill RX81U-ES-25B 2.5" IDE to USB 2.0 External Enclosure

Pros: Very compact minimalist design (which I like) Feels pretty sturdy, especially considering the price Nice fake-leather case fast enough (May be limited by my hardware) decent USB cable that includes power pigtail, if needed (2.5 ft long) power light and activity light

Cons: Nothing major... The instructions might have reminded me to remove the old caddy from the old drive - if you take a drive out of a Thinkpad, for example, it has attached a very thin metal bracket that you have to remove. I should have known, I suppose. And the instructions might explain more about the pigtail adapter. For example can you plug it in to a 5V USB charger brick?

Overall Review: Well packaged, both from a shipping standpoint and the device itself. I am impressed, especially considering the cost. Very compact, which is what you want in a portable drive like this, especially if you intend to carry it with you when you travel. The case is nice enough, and it has wide elastic band around it that allows you to tuck in the USB cable, which has a pigtail, presumably for power, if you need it. I did not. Comes with everything you need, including screws, a CD for Windoze 98 (yeah, right), and even a decent philips screwdriver. I think the cable is the right length, though others have complained it's too short. The enclosure itself appears to be plastic, but felt sturdy enough - I even thought it was metal at first. Plugged it into a laptop and a desktop, both running XP SP2 or 3, worked like a champ. I moved a 600MB AVI file in about 35 seconds. I gotta say, I really like this thing, especially considering the price.

G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B

Pros: Can't say. Memory was defective

Cons: Dead on arrival

Overall Review: I'm sure this is just bad luck, but it stinks when it happens to you. Seems that most people have been satisfied.

Have been reliable - for 3 years so far

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL

Pros: Works as designed. Not much else you can say except that I've had the for 3 years and I am about to buy another pair.

Cons: I didn't know until today that they were only running at 1600. I don't really care much, or at least I haven't needed that much speed, but if this was documented, I didn't notice it. I wish there was something prominent on the packaging that says "if you want to get the full speed out of them you MUST reconfigure your BIOS"

Overall Review: I like the color.

Update - Reviewed wrong device

Rosewill RX234 2.5"/3.5" SATA III USB 3.0 LED Single Bay HDD Docking Supports UASP and Hard Drive Capacity Up to 10TB

Pros: Aluminum case feels rugged. See review from Jim below. That was me but that review was for a different model. I expect this one to be the same EXCEPT - see cons

Cons: Shorter cable than the 9.99 version. TINY screws. Ugly case that's too big for the drive and cable. Feels like cheap plastic. The other version is much better IMHO

Overall Review: I ordered the other version, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182143&cm_re=rosewill_2.5_ide-_-17-182-143-_-Product and liked it a lot. So I ordered another, but selected this one by mistake. The tiny screws, ugly case, and shorter cable make this one less desirable than the other one. But hey, it works fine. Very good value.

Very nice, good value

Rosewill RX234 2.5"/3.5" SATA III USB 3.0 LED Single Bay HDD Docking Supports UASP and Hard Drive Capacity Up to 10TB

Pros: Does everything it should (that I tried), comes with a screwdriver (nice touch), "feels" nice, padded case, Dual USB cable

Cons: None that I can think of.

Overall Review: Great deal for the money. I especially like two things - (1) the soft case has an elastic band that allows you to tuck in the USB cable for travel, and (2) it just "feels" solid to me. The cover is metal (aluminum?) not plastic. I'm buying another.

Solid fast disk, seems to deliver what's promised

Kingston SSDNow V100 2.5" 256GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV100S2/256GZ
Kingston SSDNow V100 2.5" 256GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV100S2/256GZ

Pros: Well-packaged, rugged case Very fast, (as advertised)

Cons: Some of these MAY NOT apply to this version, as I got a bundle meant to be installed in a laptop. It included a 2.5" external enclosure that is meant to hold your old drive while you use the bundled cloning software (on CD) to clone to your new SSD, installed in your laptop. - USB cable is very short, too short to attach a desktop machine - Drive wouldn't work on several of my USB ports, probably due to a power issue. (I have several USB adapters; only one of them worked with this drive). - CD software is only usable for cloning. If you want to use the drive as an external drive you'll need 3rd party backup software. (Most of you have this already or you wouldn't even be thinking of an SSD, so this doesn't figure much into my rating) - The side screw holes are too small for the screws that are used to attach the drive to the carriage used by my thinkpat T60 internal drive.

Overall Review: I thought that maybe the threadlock on the screws might be the problem, but the screws fit just fine in the holes UNDER the drive I ended up not using any screws at all. The drive is NOT formatted, not partitioned, and also is not recognized as a drive when you plug it in to Windows. You need to use Windows Disk Management to mark the drive usable before you can even partition it or format it. I don't expect a new bare drive to be formatted or partitioned, but I did expect it to be seen as a valid drive. No big deal Summary: Despite all me negative findings, I really do like the drive. It is amazingly fast. I suppose that may be true of all SSDs, and this is my first. But now that I have it working, I have to give it at least a 4 out of 5
