BenQ GW Series GW2750HM Glossy Black 27

  • neweggOwned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Beautiful static images, movies/videos
Pleasant experience for most games
Deep blacks, high level of color detail even in shadows
Great price for a monitor of this quality and size
New version is flicker-free

Cons: The 4-12ms GTG response time causes noticeable ghosting in games, but the severity of the blur effect varies depending on the scene.

In most scenes, it results in a very subtle blur effect that causes slight loss of texture detail when the camera is moving. The ghosting in these scenes is not distracting. In fact, it can be difficult to detect depending on your FPS, how close you are to the monitor, how good your eyesight is, and whether you've experienced monitors with faster response times in the past.

However, darker scenes with many complex, contrasting objects or textures with many contrasting details cause severe, distracting ghosting artifacts. The best example I have found is Skyrim. During the day in Skyrim, ghosting problems are limited to the subtle blur effect described previously. However, at dusk, at night, in dark dungeons, etc., when you transition from standing still to moving, you will often notice a severe, distracting change in the brightness of the scene. If the objects you are looking at are mostly dark but have many small, bright details (such as the speckled earth and foliage of the Skyrim terrain), when your character moves or when you move the camera steadily, the mostly dark elements of the objects swallow up the small bright details due to ghosting.

The net effect is a distracting overall decrease in the brightness of the objects you are looking at. As soon as you stop moving, the details come back and the objects appear brighter. Therefore depending on the scene and how your character moves, you may experience noticeable changes in object brightness when you start and stop moving, and sometimes even as you move steadily due to the bobbing motion of the camera.

The effect is amplified dramatically (to unacceptable levels) if you use a mod that sharpens the image, or if you achieve a similar effect by increasing the monitor's sharpness to maximum. The game is certainly still playable in these scenes, but it is a less pleasant experience.

Other Thoughts: For general use and watching movies/video, this monitor is fantastic. For gaming, if you are not sensitive to ghosting and the games you intend to play do not have many dark scenes with the contrast/sharpness qualities described above, it is also a great choice.

However, if you are sensitive to ghosting, or the games you play do have dark scenes with many contrasting/sharp details, you may want to look into buying a monitor with a much faster response time.
