Very fast, but not perfect

GIGABYTE BRIX GB-BXi7-4770R 2 x 204Pin Intel Iris Pro graphics 5200 Mini-PC Barebone
GIGABYTE BRIX GB-BXi7-4770R 2 x 204Pin Intel Iris Pro graphics 5200 Mini-PC Barebone

Pros: Very fast with 16 GB of 1866 MHz RAM and a Samsung 840 EVO mSATA solid state drive, running Ubuntu Linux. Supports two monitors. Small. Easy to install the DRAM and SSD. Ubuntu 13.10 installs and runs great (except for the Wifi).

Cons: Fan becomes audible at the slightest load. Just surfing the web, it's quiet enough though. However, fan is always running. No SD card reader. No eSATA connector. There's no Linux support for the Wifi card (in progress). Bluetooth works under Ubunto 13.10 though, as does video, audio, and wired LAN. BIOS is UEFI, but still a simple character-based screen (not a GUI). When in BIOS, CPU gets very hot very fast (fan runs full speed). Some BIOS options I can't figure out--the help text is useless, and there's no documentation.

Overall Review: System uses 21 watts at idle under Ubuntu Linux. Suspend uses 4 watts. Hibernate uses 0 watts if you turn on "ERP" in the BIOS. I haven't tested the 3D gaming performance (not what I use the machine for). It would be easy for Gigabyte to put in an eSATA port and connect it to their proprietary SATA header on the motherboard. TIP: BIOS won't recognize an optical drive on the front USB ports, only on the back ones. I used this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148729 And this SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147316

A pain in the neck

Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

Pros: Small. Light weight. Comfortable. Nothing sticking out the side of the computer (like on USB mice). Works on both Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). I don't have to re-pair it as others have said.

Cons: Uses two batteries. Imprecise. Difficult to position over small things, like borders. Feels sluggish. The buttons are mushy. I like a nice click.

Overall Review: The Bluetooth is difficult to get set up initially, but that's a problem with Windows and Bluetooth in general, not with the mouse itself. Overall, I much prefer the feel and precision of my Logitech VX Revolution USB wireless mouse. Sure, it's bigger and has the receiver hanging out the side of the laptop, but it just works. If you want to be productive, don't buy this mouse.

Well-built, a little noisy

Rosewill RX-358 V2 BLK - Black, 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA External Enclosure with Internal 80 mm Fan
Rosewill RX-358 V2 BLK - Black, 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA External Enclosure with Internal 80 mm Fan

Pros: Solid construction Attractive in black eSATA Fan switch

Cons: Not as quiet as I would like when the fan is on.

Overall Review: Fan can be switched off. It's really only necessary when the drive is working hard. I have a WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM drive, and most of the time the aluminum housing is enough to cool it. The BIOS in my laptop (a Lenovo Y450) won't recognize the drive connected via eSATA in AHCI mode, and so won't boot from it. However, once Windows 7 is running, it will recognize the drive fine. If I switch from AHCI to IDE mode, then the BIOS will boot from it. I think this is just a problem with the BIOS in this computer, and not with the drive or enclosure. It will also boot from the drive connected via USB.
